I guess it's too late, but Jax chemical makes a metal blackner.

Definitely looks like it belongs... well done. Did you have to drill pilot holes for each nail? I am wanting to weld up a picture frame from thin sheet or plate metal for a large signed print by Thom Ross for my wife. Thinking of doing something very similar. I think a steel rustic frame would suit it perfectly maybe with some hammered rivets or something to jazz it up a bit. She has had this print for years and it is just tacked up on a basement wall. It would surely be a wonderful surprise for her since she thinks I don't even care about it.

Nail it on the wall with 24 nails per side! I used a sheetmetal hand punch, (copy of a roper-whitney #5 junior) that cost only $49. I wish I had a real one.

I've been lurking on this thread for a while, just saw the finished product. Excellent!! It fits in with the rest of the floor and stove perfectly!

Not complaining about that beautiful floor, but sometimes the nails look better (older) if you grind the heads sorta square....
I wonder if Dalys is available around here...(Ontario) Our water base finish on poplar in the front hall isn't lasting like the oil base stuff in the living room...

Thanks for all the help along the way you guys I really appreciate it. And glad you like it too, thx for the kudos.

Hmmmmm neat idea! I tried squaring the head with just a couple whacks with a hammer it looks pretty good but maybe it rounds out again when you drive it in. Good thing I didn't get the sqaure nails suggestion earlier I'd still be hammering.
