Help me find my tig problem

What I did was go to Wal-Mart go through their reading glasses, for Tig welding hold something up with real fine print about 12-inches from your face. For Mig and stick welding hold the same thing up to your face about 18-inches away. Sometimes the dollar store as the same glasses as Wal-Mart for 1/10th the price.

I'm in the market for a new welding helmet, and have been looking at the offerings from ArcOne...Seems they have magnifying inserts for their helmets...my eyes are getting older too, I may pounce on a couple inserts of different x magnification when I pull the trigger on the new helmet. I'll report back if they're decent...

Just got back from my gas supplier in San Jose. Regarding helium, they tell me they have only one 80 cf tank
in inventory ($56) but don't know if or when they will get more

Something doesn't add up. That's about what I pay for argon.

The shop has not received He in a while. This is the last of inventory, and is sold at earlier prices. Demand
has also dropped. The shop does not know what the price would be if they got more He in. Just reporting
what I was told.

I haven't been tigging long, but this summer I have run through a couple of big tanks of argon. I get the black when i touch the tungsten to the work piece. For a beginner it is near unavoidable. You must use a grinder wheel dedicated to only grinding tungsten. if you intend to weld aluminum, you need a second grinder wheel for only aluminum tungstens. Once contaminated, you have no choice but grind the electrode. Some experts say grind back past the contamination, others say break it off, then re sharpen.Stick out about the diameter of your tungsten. Arc length about the diameter of your tungsten. This won't be easy, do the best you can. Pre flow is important. Post flow is also necessary. Check the manual it is often adjustable. Don't move the torch away for a few seconds after extinguishing the arc. Flow rate is important, too much will cause turbulence'and bring air into the mix. Too little, you won't get coverage.Failure to grind paint, grease, or rust far enough away can cause blackening.
Today I welded outdoors, almost no wind, but still a problem with gas coverage.
Stay with it, it will get better.

My eyes are good in good light. I find that through welding glass I need all the help I can get. Fogging is sometimes a problem, solvable with either a compact fluorescent light bulb in the helmet when it isn't on your head, or a hair dryer on low to warm it. This seems to make my wife grumpy, could anyone explain
