If those rods are red they are 5p if they are grey they are 5p+

5P+ is a much improved 6010 over the original 5P. Lincoln added something to the flux to make them burn smoother but I can't remember what. It should say one or the other on the package but 5P isn't seen too much anymore. Strangely enough 6010 need about 5% moisture in the coating. If the rods are burning kind of funny, try dipping one in water, wiping it off and then welding with it. The moisture won't affect the weld. 6010 generally use less heat than 7018. A 1/8" 6010 uses about the same heat as a 3/32" 7018 but another way to set your heat it is to strike an arc and push the rod right into the plate while it's burning. If your heat is too cold, it won't keep an arc. This is how a lot of pipe welders set their initial heat for doing root passes. They may need to tweak it a bit but this gets them in the ball park. Once they try welding on the pipe they can adjust their heat as required. 6010 takes a little more practice to get the hang of.

Arc, thanks for the tips here! I was out in the garage again today and got a chance to burn through some 6010. It was raining out, which reminded me to try and dip the rods in water, and wipe them off before starting to weld. This really did seem to help. It was odd, sometimes I could get a good arc started and, like you said, could push the rod right into the puddle and it would just seem to gouge deep and stay lit. I still had to run over 70A to get anything decent on my 1/4" plate though. Some rods I stuck too many times and ended up with blackend flux, which made them nearly impossible to run. 6010 is still winning, but I think I made some progress today.

A question, when I am running them, I notice that they burn A LOT faster than other rods I have used, so I have to feed the rod quicker to keep an arc...what arc length should I be trying for? It seems that the only way I could get them to run continuously was to pretty much push the rod into the puddle while whipping and pausing. They were digging DEEP, had to be cutting in between 1/16" and 1/8"...

Just to do a sanity check and to restore my ego I took some 6013 and made a small pad of beads...looked great (for me).

Thanks,
Joe

On another note...I wish I had someone near with with a PA200 or PA300 or similar unit with Arc Force...would be very interesting to try the 6010 port and see if it made me "better"...
