Help on a outdoor thermometer that works!!!!

My wife keeps replacing our outdoor thermometers. they all fail after a short time.

anyone have one that seems accurate and has survived a few years?

I have had one of these for 3-3 years. It was a gift from Costco. It worked so well I bought another one for my parents.

Davis Instruments makes nice ones too....all made in the USA. My buddy is going on 10 years with his.

Is it analog (bimetal spring), digital, or mercury (red liquid-glass).
Maybe someone will enjoy my weather story. Years ago when I chose my easy to remember house phone number it was close to the number you could call for the weather.
One morning my phone rings at 4 a.m.!
Some guy said he was going hunting. I asked him if he had a window. "Uh...yes" he said. I said "open it, stick your head out, pull it back in...if it's wet, it's raining, if it's white and cold it's snowing, if your hair is all messed up it's windy" so on...he was laughing hard when I slammed the phone.

I've had a $10 dollar thermometer hanging under the eves of my work shed for 38 years. I can see it when I look out the kitchen window. Had to replace it eleven years ago. Monster wind storm blew it off the nail and it smashed when it hit the ground.

It's a round unit - got it at the local Ace Hardware store.

Go in a box store etc. and look at the thermometers...hard to find any two that read the same...!

I got two cheap ones from a box store after looking for two that read the same. That was probably 19 or 20 years ago. They still work and agree with my Accurite weather station.

I have a Honeywell WiFi Thermostat that I installed as well as their external temperature probe. Works quite well and gives accurate readings. Keep it our of the sun though very accurate temp.

had one of these for aver a year so far and works great
I am in the hvac industry so i am always looking for temp reading gizmos
had to order this one from maunfacturers sit because I wanted the waterproof one. If you can leave it under cover they make a couple models that you can get on amazon
I have compared them to my work temp gauges and they have been right on. I use them inside air handlers to measure temps without the doors open

You have a smart phone? Even your computer is listening

Unless you're talking about blowing stuff up or have treasonous plans I doubt anyone finds you interesting enough to waste their time listening

You are correct about the phone and computer. They are bad enough but I have no intention of voluntarily adding an even more invasive device because I want to speak to my equipment.

We bought an Accurite dial type a few years ago after several cheaper models failed to read correctly after a year or two. It still tracks exactly with an fancy indoor/outdoor electronic one.

And of course the Spy tells you the temperature somewhere else, maybe 20 miles away, maybe 100 miles away, wherever the reporting station is not necessarily on your property like one hanging on your deck or porch.

I find getting an accurate temperature a challenge inasmuch as the Bureau of Meteorology have their reference points in some obscure areas, in Melbourne it is in amongst high rise buildings and is subject to heat retention of those buildings overnight, no wind and a host of other variables that don't affect us plus we live 80km away and are on a different bay and subject to different conditions, I find the digital thermometer in the car is relatively accurate and gives me an idea of what the temperature is, at home we have a Galileo thermometer which gives us an idea of what the temperature is, we also have an Admiral Fitzroy weather predictor which is totally useless but a nice companion for the thermometer.

I don't think I've had one fail, other than the lens (we're talking dial thermometers) getting so cloudy you can't see the numbers anymore or it falling off the building & getting broken. Accuracy? Lotsa luck on that. I've found very few that are accurate over the entire range...might be dead on at 50, but reads 10 deg low at 20. I'll generally tweak the needle to split the difference.

I've tried cheap ones, and relatively expensive ones and none are very accurate.

Don't have a smart phone, and I don't see how my computer can listen since there's no microphone on it. Track web surfing? Yeah, that's a given.
Still the principle of the thing. We have little enough privacy as it is today, why invite a spy device into your home?

Dial thermometers are basically a pointer on a spring. Very little to fail, though I have seen cases where ice got inside and mangled the spring.
