Oh yeah - Mr. Wizard on black and white TV! Those were the days!

Go to your local ag store and get you one of those recycled rubber feed/water tubs/bowls. They have them as small as two quart or smaller. Then you can just bump it and the ice will pop out. You can’t tear them up. I know, because I have ran over them with a tractor more than once. Another thing, if you use a regular hard crock, you don’t need to fill the crock all the way to the top with water. The rabbit won’t drink that much between waterings and you will have room for the next time.

See, even learned something non-tractor related. Didn't know Don Herbert had that long of career on TV. I know I learned a lot from it, hope somebody decides to re-run it or make something similiar to it when my son gets old enough to start comprehending some of the stuff he use to go over. Mr. Wizard was so much better produced carried out than the PBS science shows. You were learning without realizing it and it made it more fun.

<font color=blue>but warm/hot water will actually freeze before cold water......And they say TV isn't educational.</font color=blue>

I think this is one of the reasons they say that.

You got that right.

But I did love Mr. Wizard.

Since you didn't believe me:

Guess that explains why Mom & Dad's hot water pipes would occasionaly freeze but the cold never would.

Jim,

Still don't /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif You can set up special conditions to perceive that hot water will freeze faster than cold, but all else being equal this is a myth.

I'm guessing the myth originated by placing two containers in a freezer in contact with ice. The hot container melted the ice and had much better conductivity to the water than the colder container, this coupled with the loss of mass of the hotter container due to evaporation may allow the hotter container to freeze first.

I was kinda bored so I did some more research and found this one from the University of California:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.weburbia.com/physics/hot_water.html#Experiments>http://www.weburbia.com/physics/hot_water.html#Experiments</A>

It even has a bibliography to credit its research including Scientific America. Funny thing is Aristotle knew of this theory, but yet "modern" man didn't come across this until 1969 by a high school student making ice cream and it still can't be explained.

One of those strange but true facts that scientists would love to explain but can't.

Not only will hot water freeze before cold water, pure antifreeze, "ethylene glycol" will freeze at 8 degrees above zero. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF6/680.html>http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF6/680.html</A>

Please don't mix this with the rabbits water. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

How come I take a 5 gallon bucket of hot water out to my animals on a cold wintery night and fill the pail and it might have a small skin of ice at the most, but set a pail of tap water from the cold supply side outside and it will freeze substantially more,or bust a hole in the ice where water is fluid again and it will freeze back again quicker. I always use warm/hot water to do my chores on a cold day/night.
