I have seen many of those trucks with restricted heater cores a simple back flush may help considerably.

That's what I'm thinking. Remove one (or both) thermostats and get some radiator flushing fluid from the local parts store and give it a good flush. The install the new thermostats and new radiator fluid.

truck randomly started to overheat. Coolant was full before leaving. Speed was 45 miles per hour and truck was taking longer to warm up than usual. Driving down the road my truck reached its normal mark for the temperature that it usually sits on which is around 1/4 or 1/3. I turned the heat on MAX expecting heat but it was ice cold? Remember now I have designed the blend door to stay open on full hot only. No heat at this point ment I did not have hot coolant or any coolant flowing through the heater core. How odd I thought. with in no more than 60 seconds later my temperature gauge rose straight to just over three quarters. At three quarters of max on the gauge I normally pull any vehicle over and find the problem. I pulled over to find my coolant at the same level. My two thoughts are air in the system or sludge in the system blocking flow. My third thought of course is this is all connected to the faulting thermostat(s) I have.

What do you guys think? My engine fan is engauged by the ecm at a set temperature. it only runs when the engine is first started in the summer but never after that point.

and yes I planned on doing a major flush for my cooling system. I need to fix some things under the hood.

It's got issues. Could be a clogged heater core or radiator. Thermostat or water pump is also suspect.

Get it fixed before you do real damage like a blown head gasket.

it has not done it since. I always let it idle for AT LEAST 2 minutes in below 0 F weather. Anything can happen with cars/ trucks. We are all human. it needs a strong flush, thermostat and unfortunately im unhappy to say the front cover started to leak a few weeks ago.

I will be doing everything as a project: front cover seal, belt and tentioner, water pump, thermostat, flush, Timing chain, all hoses, etc. Might as well while I am in that work area.

Having no other vehicle to drive I did stop leak the front cover. Im sorry to tell you guys that. Never had to stop leak anything like that and it is upsetting. I have no other vehicle to get me to my full time job. Its been upsetting because that could leak coolant directly into the oil. Im trying to fix it this weekend at a friends heated garage. wish me luck

I can't recall if you said you had confirmed that you had anti-freeze protection for the temps you are experiencing ...some symptoms could be ice-dams/ice expansion ...and, when you yank the thermostat, and idle it, look for bubbles in the radiator (hoping you don't find these) that might point to head gasket failure.

How many miles on the motor? It may be better to replace it. I did this with my 97 F150.
