Help selecting a pellet stove.

The electrical requirements are in the 300-400 watt range for most stoves. Then there are the hot rods that consume extra juice for a small time but if your stove is already running then that isn't an issue. 3 deep cycle batteries should last a good while.

But really, if you can't handle losing heat production for a couple of hours then I would think maybe you need to go for a car ride or something. Go out to dinner somewhere and wait it out.

I checked one model that runs on 350 watts and the self ignitor ups the total to just over 1000 watts while it is running.

Figure out the important number on deep cycle batteries and that is the available amp-hours. Figure out the efficiency loss of your inverter and then you can see how long the batteries will last.

Worst case is when the batteries die you need to run your auto which makes plenty of extra power to run the inverter to run the stove.

A handy little honda eu2000i generator is about ideal for running the stove.

Just one other thing to consider. There have been several stories in the news in New England about the shortage of wood pellets. Many people are having a hard time finding them and the manufacturers are telling the suppliers they can't keep up with the demand.

I'd hate to see you get a stove and then not be able to find pellets to run it.

Good Luck,
Kevin

shortage or price of pellets is why i think the pellet/corn stove would be the best bet.

( ...it also has a manual setting feature where you can set it to burn so many pounds of pellets per hour. )

What is the electrical usage for this mode? I have been thinking about one of these for the rare occasion when power is out for days at a time.

Another question--Are there any issues with insurance companies, especially for trailers (oops, manufactured houses, to be PC)?

There is not only a shortage of pellets but also a shortage of parts for the stoves themselves. Just got off the phone with my dealer they delivered the stove a month ago with out the surround said it was on back order. Well now he claims that manufacture's have cut off parts until Jan 1st but call back in a week to see if there is any news. If it is not good news he will be picking the stove back up and refunding my $.

Kevin,

I bought my pellets in June. But I heard the same thing. My supplier is only taking cash orders for existing customers. There is no extra to supply a new customer.

I bought mine at 159 a ton. Today its 190.

We have tons of pellets out here. But then, we don't have tons of pellet stoves either.

Cleanburn pellets, 139$ per ton at the hardware store on the way home.

Being a waste product of lumber production I would suspect that the abundance of pellets is somewhat related to location. I could load up two tons and bring them to you for a price....
