Tiller Help Selecting appropriate tiller for 90hp tractor

I just bought my very first tractor - a 90hp 1983 CASE 1690.

I need to find a tiller that would work to dig up my pasture that has regrown small willows (waist-high. Nothing thicker than my thumb. No rocks - black earth on top of clay.). We are preparing part of our land to become a U-Pick berry orchard, and part to become a market garden.

I am looking for used equipment, but there just doesn't seem to be anything out there for a 90hp. Can I use something rated for a 70hp?

Are there any particular tillers that you would recommend for my needs?

I am a complete newbie and know nothing!

My pto has both 540 and 1000.

I would think that as long as you have a slip clutch on the PTO, you adjust correctly, and keep it adjusted correctly, that you could use any tiller that you can hitch to your 3PT. Maybe a Howard or Kuhn?

howard or rhino is probably the best i know from first hand expirence that the heavier ones will both till up asphalt

My vote is for a used Howard. Very pleased with mine.

Even waist high willows will wrap around the roter and be a pain to constantly unwind. You'll need to mow the willows first by all means. Your tractor is a whopper for tilling. Most tillers are designed for smaller tractor with gear boxes/bearings/drives to match the horsepower of those tractors. You can use a tiller that is not rated for 90 HP but you'll have to make SURE the clutch is working and slipping by adjusting the bolts and letting it slip then tightening them for it to till. A tiller stong enough and wide enough for that tractor is going to cost a pretty penny (Loony?). Folks have a hard time finding used tillers in areas where they are pretty common and I doubt you'll find used in your remote area.

Are you going to try to till between the rows of berries?

I have used a Kuhn EL 62-210 that is 84 inches wide this summer on my 44 PTO Kubota. Its a lug and a half for that tractor. Your tractor could handle the larger 82 series just fine and it has a bigger stronger gearbox. I'm not sure what your area dealers can get you but you will be looking at a 3300 dollars for a Turkey made CMM up to 8000 for a French made Kuhn EL82 series tiller. If you can find a rental or hire it out that might be the most economical for you. We have a commerical flower farm here and our tillers get quite a workout compared to folks that just till a garden or two a year. If your going to really do lots of commerical tilling you'll probrobly need a "commercial grade" tiller either new or used.

If your going to need to till between the rows of berry bushes think about hireing it out to break the ground and then get a quality walk behind tiller like a BCS or a Grillo to keep it cultivated. That might be your best long term idea to look at.

Google blecavator. I have a 10'er that will work the **** out of my jd7700. The best you will be able to do with 90 pto hp is probably 8'. It is an absolute beast.

I am in north dakota so that wont work! I have a frontier 1207 tiller though that is a 93 inch beast around 8 grand for a new one though
