Help! Tractor won\'t start!

Went out this morning to use the tractor (JD 970), turned the key and got nothing but a clicking noise. It tried to turnover once or twice but only briefly and went back to the clicking. I hooked the jumber cables to it just to make sure the battery had enough power and that didn't help, still the clicking. It's been about 6 weeks since I've been able to use the tractor so it's been sitting a while.

Is this a starter problem? Please help.

I would go back and try to jump start it. I don't think you
had a good connection ground or pos. Also cheap booster cables will not carry enough juice to jump a dead battery.

Had a similar problem with my <font color="green"> JD </font> F735 a couple of weeks ago. Thought it was a bad battery. After checking out the whole system, found that the ground wire from battery was loose at the engine end. Since tightening I have not had a problem starting.

That was it! Don't think I had a good ground. Found some bare metal and it started right up. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thanks for the help!!

I've had this problem with our 32' diesel trawler with a 60hp Isusu 4cyl engine. It's always been corrosion in terminal fittings, splices or just corroded wire...never the starter or batteries. Marine life is tough on electrical.

Maybe new battery time. Same thing happened to out 970.

Just this weekend I ran into one of the safety features on my new 990: the tractor will not start if the PTO is engaged. Not exactly the problem you seem to be facing, but it gave me a good scare when I went thru my start up procedure and got nothing. A careful check of everything showed me my mistake.

Oh, don't worry you will get used to that nice 990. Our 970 had a good Yuasa battery that was the original battery until last year when it went dead.
