I went to the dealer and asked for the oil/tranny filters as well as recommended fluids for my 50hour service. I questioned them on both the tranny filter and the viscosity. They didn't sell me the orange filter . . told me that was just a casing for the insert . . . and sold me 15-40 engine oil. I said the manual calls for 5-30 . . they said it's better oil. I called them again and they reiterated that.

Now that they screwed up on the filter, I'm not willing to take their advice without backup.

What are your thoughts on oil viscosity . . .and IF the filter they sold me is for the suction screen . . . should i do it and leave the orange filter or take it back??

Thanks!

When I got the filters for my 2320, I got the black tran filter also. In fact it is a different manufacture also. But it does work.

The engine oil filter is also different. The original filter is slightly smaller than the replacement filter. By smaller I mean the oil filter was just a smidgen smaller, but smaller enough to cause problem with the oil filter cap wrench to just skip and not grab the original filter. Also the original filter was put on by a muscle bound "I'm going to tighten this baby as tight as it will go" kind of person. It was a bear to get off.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic oil in the engine. 5w40 I think it was. Back in my mind, seems like the owners manual and the engine hood information conflict as to the volume of oil and the viscosity.

If you want, I'll check and get back to you.

I checked the hood . .and mine says 5w30 for winter. Same as manual. 15w40 just sounds so heavy. And the tranny filter they gave me was def the suction screen . . so I replaced it. It came with new magnets.

Wow! Was there a lot of metal shavings in the base of the filter housing . . and some smaller ones on the magnets.

Tranny Fluid specs are all over the place. The manual says 13.1L . . the dealer said 15L . .and the hood says 10L. ??!! Although of the 2305 it says 13L, so perhaps a typo.

I put in 14L and it was over filled. After running for 10min and resting it for 20 . .. I drained 2L, then refilled until it just passed half on the window. Seems to be 13L. (Note: I did remove, drain and reattach the orange filter).

Re: the engine oil . . .I think I'll go find some 5w30 unless you or anyone thinks i'm too cautious . .. .

Thanks.

mx, I have a MS WORD document outlining what I did for the 50 hour service. Also some pictures. I could email them if you would like.

Make sure you service the transmission suction screen. I found a LOT of metal in the bottom of the sump, and stuck on the magnets.

Have a look at my previous post re: the shavings (i think I posted just as you replied).

I'd love to see your doc if you don't mind! I'm at mx125@rogers.com.

Thanks BigD

I did the same thing on the tranny oil. Put too much in and then had to drain some out.

Sorry, I think we were both typing and posting at the same time! I didn't see your second post till I had sent mine.

Ok, I'll send several emails. First with the Word Doc, and others with pictures.

Been using Mobil 1 5w-30 in my 4010 for 230 hours. Happened to have some 5w-40 last oil change and used it. 15wxx oil is just too heavy for the winter time, to quickly get lubrication to the top end; 5wxx or even 0wxx oils are still heavier at startup than a 30 grade at operating temperature.

Always keep your filter boxes and take them back for each next filter changes. My dealer screwed up and gave me the wrong hydraulic filter my last time there for my 250 hour change (well, 230).

When I did my 50 hour change, I did the oils in stages: engine, hydraulic and front gear oil. That way, I didn't run out of disposal room. Doubt I'll ever change the gear oil again. Only reason to would be if a seal starts to drip or to sling.

I've found the same thing. The manual for the 2520 says 5W-30 or 10W-30, but I've been to two different dealers and all they have is 15W-40 or 5W-30. It's tough to be willing to shell out the $$ for genuine JD stuff, but they don't have it available.
