Thanks guys. I went out and bought Castrol GTX 5w30. As a side note . . I n oticed Deisel specific oils on the shelf. I'd be interested in what exactly is meant by that designation? Is that simply the marketing speak they put on the 15w40 oils?

Anyway . . service is done except for the greasing. BigD9 pointed me towards some undocumented zirks as well . . .

One last question . . . How exactly do I "drain water from fuel separator"??

Wow! Was there a lot of metal shavings in the base of the filter housing . . and some smaller ones on the magnets.

I found the same thing when I did my 50-hour hydro oil change. It seemed like a surprisingly large amount of shavings (just short of a tablespoon?) in the housing and on the screen and magnets, but I've been assured that it's normal.

Thanks Joe. If I didn't see others saying the same . . I would have called the dealer too! I'm guessing the 50 will bring the most shavings and subsequent changes, less so.

You just bought some ExxonMobil base oil with Castrol additive. Doubt the GTX is for diesels. Mobil 1 is.

Right . . .I didn't buy the deisel oil . . I just saw it and wondered if it was important.

I have been using the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel oil 4w40. It seems to work really well.

On the filters, I have found that they change numbers and colors a lot. I have a motor home with a Cummins ISB engine and I swear I have 4 oil filter number changes listed in my records. My gut says that every time a manufacture like John Deere, Cummins or Freightliner changes suppliers of the filters, the number changes. Or like the parts man at John Deere said "I think corporate people get tired of using the same number and change it to keep us on our toes" Oh well, that is my 2 cents worth.

Are you saying you bought the 5-30 GTX for your 2320? Like Ralph said, I don't think it's rated for diesel use. If it isn't diesel rated (CH, CI or CJ in the API "donut"), you shouldn't use it in a diesel.
Every Yanmar I've ever seen seems to love Rotella "T" 5w-40 synthetic (or semi-synthetic, depending on who you listen to).
J-D 0W-40 is also highly recommended by J-D, although some of their dealers don't carry it, which seems strange.

Uh oh . . .yes . . it's standard GTX . . not Cx rated. Crap. So I guess I have to drain and refill with deisel specific.

Is that a cylinder compression difference between gasoline and deisel oils?

Diesel-rated oils have an additive to better keep the diesel soot in suspension. Think this was a problem with early synthetic oils. Dino oils would hold the soot in suspension better. They've obviously solved the problem. Mobil 1 is diesel rated now.

I have no idea about Castrol GTX. When I worked for Exxon in lube oil engineering and then manufacturing, they bought all their base oils from us. Think Castrol still doesn't make a drop of oil.

If it is diesel rated . .it doesn't say it on the container. My first diesel! . . now I know!
Thanks guys . . . I drained the GTX and will go back to the JD diesel oil.
