Hey folks I need some help with the translation of a JD serial #. I've looked for a previous thread, but so far haven't found it, that breaks the code. I'm primarily interested in the model yr. and where built. Looks as if it's a 5320 turbo. Here's the number: LV5320S332746. Thanks.

You'll have to let a JD dealer look the serial number up for you. The only thing the serial number tells is model number and what type tranny.

Thanks Ron and all who responded. That is a tremendous help. I'm considering buying this tractor. Looks as if it was built or sold in July 03 depending on what the transfer date on all the components means. Wonderful folks on TBNet.

Stephanie,
Thanks for the info. I found that the JD 5320 that I was interested in was put in service by the Boston Tractor Co in Dixie, GA. Another JD dealer was very cooperative and found this for me. When I called the Boston Tractor Co. they had no interest in looking the owner/renter history up for me. Prior to this A person in my hometown made the statement that a tractor he had recently acquired might be one of those "Georgia tractors" and there's no telling how many hrs. it really has on it. I don't know what he was referring to. Can any of our Georgia friends shed any light on what may be going on in that area? Thanks.

I am not from Georgia, however we have purchased some of the larger tractors from lease returns in that area. We refer to them as sugar tractors. They have been leased from JD company and used for one year. When we get them they have about 1000 hours on them and still retain full factory warranty. As far as the number of hours, the only way that can be altered is by replacing the tach. When the tach is replaced it has to be documented to be leagal. When doing a PIN search on the tractor you are interested in, I saw nothing that would raise any red flags for me. Good luck in your search. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tractors from the south are notorious for being used for thousands of hours and either having the hours turned back or having a new hour meter put on them. On the older tractors they will be painted to look like new and be falling apart inside. In the south tractors can be used year round for field work. In the northern states unless you have livestock your tractors are usually idle for 4-6 months in the winter.

And just to clarify it's not illegal to put in a new hour meter. It is on cars but not tractors. At least not in any of the states I know. It's illegal to misrepresent if you know but hour meters are replaced all the time and never certified. Even the dealers don't do it. I've called on numerous tractors and alot of times they will even put in a new hour meter if the engine was rebuilt. If you ask how many hours before the rebuild they don't have a clue.

That is indeed the case with tractors handled by "iron jockeys", however this tractor has never been settled for or delivered. It would not be in the dealers best interest in this case to try and alter hours. More than likely it will still have some or all of the original warranty on it. Warranty usually starts from the settlement date.

I think that any of us that have been around larger tractors for any length of time have seen horrible examples of tractor abuse and cover up on some of the older southern tractors, but I would not be too afraid of the tractor originally mentioned in this thread. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
