Hello,

I am having an issue with my AGCO snowblower model SB550A. I am continually breaking shear pins and it appears that the auger is rubbing against the bottom of the snowblower shell which has created some pretty big divots in the metal.

It seems like the auger needs to come up but do not know how to do it or if it is possible.

If any one has any suggestions on how to fix this problem it will be greatly appreciated.

Fred

Hello Fred,

If your cross auger is constantly breaking shear pins
due to the auger flexing it is due to the weakened steel
shell of the snow caster.(the shell is the portion surrounding the cross augers).

See last paragraph first:

At least adding a piece of strap steel to the bottom of the shell between the
skids would solve this problem as they did not use heavy enough steel to construct
the metal shell that surrounds the cross auger.

You will have to put the snow caster on its nose to see where the
damage is and bolt the widest piece of flat stock that can be used
to stiffen the shell.

It may be that the cutting edge is gone and you do not realize it is
missing IF it was equipped with one to begin with when it was made
by AGCO.

Can you take a picture of it, Fred.

leonz answer makes sense to me. The lower portion of the auger shell is weakened--maybe bent upward toward the auger, missing or severely worn cutting edge.

If you raise the blower up using the 3pt lift, hold a straight 2x4 or similar up to the cutting edge and see if it has a bow in it.

If you can't grab the ends of the auger, jerk it up and down and feel movement, then the auger end bearings are probably okay. A failed bearing could allow the auger to drop from its normal position.

Have you had/used this for a long time or is it new to you? Not to insult, but if it is being used on a gravel driveway, it can pick up rocks which will get between the auger and the housing causing shear pins to break. Is it set so that it is off of the ground a bit when you are using it?
