( Other than the fuel economy, is there any reason why one should not leave it in the 4 wheel drive all the time?
)

I think 4WD is not needed for most mowing tasks. By the nature of the mechanics, one tire has to slip in a turn and being in 4WD does put the front axle under more wear than if it is just "floating" without being driven. Of course, the rear differential also has to allow one wheel to slip in a turn, but the components of the rear axle are much heavier than the front axle.

When I work moving dirt or using ground engagement implements whether on flat or hillsides, I leave my drivtrain in 4WD. When on the road or mowing were I don't need the traction, I take it out of 4WD. It may not mean less wear on the front axle components, but if I had a failure at some point in the future, I'd probably always wonder if it weren't my own fault. I just want to give my tractor every chance it has to last a long time. Since NH recommends taking the tractor out of 4WD when not needed, that's what I do. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now if you have the sensitrak option, I might be tempted to just leave it in 4WD all the time. Hmmm.... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

With the Class III TC SuperSteer rigs, you really don't have a choice of "plain 2WD". One of the left fender-levers gives a choice of 2WD with Sensitrack (automatic "as-needed" initiation of 4WD), or full-time 4WD.

I've never worked with a non-supersteer Boomer so I can't give a personal comparison between the SS and non-SS tractors. However, with the rotating front axle geometry, I think there is more skuffing with the SS unit in Full-time 4WD than there is with a non-SS unit in full-time 4WD. That's probably why they developed the "Sensitrack" feature.

Chris, don't you have a little lever on the left behind your seat that totally disengages 4WD? Larry Vanhorn put a bag of fertilizer behind his seat and suddenly discovered he had no 4WD. Later he discovered the lever had been moved to full-time 2WD. That happened a couple of weeks ago. Did you forget about that lever too? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No, my TC40D is an experimental prototype that doesn't have that lever!

Can you truly forget something you've never known? Sheeesh /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, I thought you might not have known about Sensitrack with Supersteer Boomers. I should have followed my instincts - that nagging little voice in my head that kept saying "what do you think your doin' telling Jinman something" the whole time I was writing that post.

I'm sure there is a lever. That's the problem with the tractor being 60 miles away - can't run out to check something before posting. I'd better bring the manual home!

Thank's for the gentle correction. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now that's funny! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I make more mistakes than I care to dicuss. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif To be sure, I checked my manual before posting to be sure about that little handle. It looks a little like the parking brake handle in the illustration in the owner's manual. I've attached the Owner's Manual instruction.

Thaaaannnkkkkkssss Jim! I was hoping to remain incognito as much as possible in these posts to protect my innocence, or what there is left of it. Should have know better putting my full name out on the profile. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Amazing, you not only know all there is to know about Boomers, but the folks who rant about them too. You remind me more and more of our good friend, J Miller. Hope you don't become as silent. Hope all is well with him too.

And just so there's no doubt, I'll sign, sincerely,

DUANE

Jim,

I'm lazy, I don't want to have to go search... and it seems that as often as not when I've looked up someone's profile, they haven't filled it out anyway and then I get more frustrated <grin>...
