Sorry..I haven't had a chance to post..been on vacation. I ordered the belt before I left..should be there when I get home Friday so maybe I can get to it this weekend..but I got another lead on a ym186 with yanmar loader I'm going to look at Saturday, $800 but it doesn't run and hasn't in 5 years..so I may have another to fix up soon.

I drained and sealed the leak today, used rtv sealer. It was only leaking in a small spot.

When I removed the hydraulic screen there were tiny metal flakes in it..I fished out a few larger pieces of metal..it looked foreign not like any gears etc..like something fell into the reservoir at some point...or does that mean anythng else? All gears work fine and no grinding that I can hear.

Parts of the pump? or the clutches? I have no idea, just guessing?

Don't think so..this tractor has 576 hours on it that I believe to be original..guy I bought it from is original owner that purchased new, he still had paperwork on it! Its possible the trans fluid has never been serviced and those flakes are leftover after manufacturing, looking in the trans case everything looks normal, no chipped gear teeth. The flakes are the size of fine glitter. I flushed it pretty good and got the screen looking like new. Guess I'll just fill her up and run it.

That's a good reason to instal a magnet somewhere but since it probably doesn't have a drain plug maybe a magnet could be glued to the outside of the screen cover? They simply stick them inside auto transmission pans and p/s pumps etc sure couldn't hurt. That is if you felt like it was necessary and wanted to spend the effort.

If you take the screen out and reach into that area with your finger, there is a deep area below the screen, at the bottom of it it feels like a small raised spot and a lot of the metal I had to fish out from down there, maybe its a magnet, it would be a ideal place to put one, i guess if it was heavy enough you could just drop it in there, it shouldn't float around?? but I don't know how much pressure runs through that area through the screen,, anyone?

Car doc, actually the plate cover for the hydraulic screen does have a drain plug, maybe that's just on the US yanmars, none of my Greys had a drain plug on the triangular plate.

Oh yeah US I didn't think about that making a difference. I knew mine didn't have one. Maybe a metric magnetic drain plug could be fitted (or drilled into the stock one) then that would be simple.

As far as a magnet floating around after installation.... by my way of thinking and I could be wrong the screen is before the pump so the fluid should be all flowing towards the screen so even if it did become dislodged it could only go as far as the screen. But that's my reasoning like I say I could be wrong.

My comment on attaching a magnet to the cover stems from oil filter magnets. they simply stick on an oil filter and trap particles and you move it to the next oil filter and so on.

If it doesn't work, you might try a product called yamabond (if you can find it). Yamabond is/or was used to seal crank cases on 2 cycle water craft...I use to use it to seal the crank case when I rebuilt my Yamaha wave runner. It holds up to oil and gasoline
