Help with PTO speed

Can someone tell me which way to move the PTO shift lever to operate the Pto at 540 rpm on my YM2700? I've finally got my Howse finish mower attached and lined up thanks to Bird's help connecting the PTO shaft and Don Black's advice to lengthen the lift arm linkage. Now if I can figure out which way to shift to 540 rpm I'll be cutting grass as soon as the current monsoon is over.

I don't know about that model, but whichever one is slowest is it.

Quite a few of the greys have 300 rpm (or slower) pto gears so the lowest is not always 540

On my 186D 540 is down and 1000 is up. Is that the way they all are?

I have seen greys with as many as 21 PTO speeds. A fair amount of the Shibaura's have 8. US models will typically only have 540 and 1000. You can rent (or borrow) a hand tachometer and find out exactly what gear you should be in, just make sure it is rated for the RPM you are testing.

YM2700 pto 1st gear: both levers forward. 2nd gear: front lever back, rear lever forward. 3rd gear: front lever forward. rear lever back. 4th gear: both levers back.
1st 467 rpms
2nd 587 rpms
3rd 951 rpms
4th 1200 rpms

Thanks for the reply. I was going to ask what the other shift lever in the back was for, but now I know thanks to you. I just finished cutting my grass and only shifted the front lever to the lowest speed but still don't know what it was. I was operating with the front lever forward so I was either 467 or 951. I can hardly wait till morning to check the back lever to see what position it's in.
