Glow plugs aren't expensive in the overall scheme of things. I think under $60 per set.

It was around $300 for the injection pump. The reason I had it rebuilt, is the guy I got it from had run homemade biodiesel in it, and said it didn't like it! Bill said it probably clogged it up. I also just had the injectors rebuilt too. They were $75.00 each. ----------------John

I was going to buy the glow plugs, but I'm not getting power to them, so that's why I'm now thinking electrical problem. When I got it home, I drove it off the trailer and parked it. I tried to start it after a day or two, and it just cranked. Seems hard to believe that the biodiesdel clogged it all at once, after it had been starting and running fine. When I went to look at it the first time, it was chilly, so he held the heat position for a little while, then it started right up. I'm going to work on the wiring this weekend and see if I can track it down. Thanks for the input!--------John

There is no kill switch present. Once you get it started, it will run until it's starved for fuel either by running out or by you closing the throttle completely.

$300 to rebuild the pump is much cheaper than buying a new one, that's for sure. Thanks.

284 International: As far as the timing, it is 25 deg. BTDC. I depth miced from the the mounting surface, to the base circle of the cam. The manual says the distance should be between 75.95 - 76.05 mm. I calculated the shim to make it 76mm. That's the only way I could figure to time it since there are no markings, or even an indicator to set the timing.

techwrtr2: I know there is no kill switch on the tractor...., what I meant by a "kill switch situation", is that something in the electrical is either broken, or shorted out preventing it from starting. I bought a new ignition switch this morning, so I'll work on it today.

I really appreciate all of you taking the time to help me out! -------John

techwrtr2, I see you have a Blackhawk loader and hoe. Do you have any pictures of the hoe? I have an SMC loader, and I want a backhoe also. I was planning on building one from the PF Engineering plans, but if I can find one for a good price, I'd buy one. Thanks!

I don't believe I've got any pictures of just the hoe, I haven't had it off in years. What can do for you though is point you to the manual.

http://www.amerequip.com/assets/documents/710-backhoe.pdf

Unfortunately at some point in the past the company did a purge of old documents and plans so they no longer have any documents beyond the manual. It's unfortunate because I'd hoped to use them to remanufacture certain damaged parts and go from plans versus a damaged part.

Manual should give you a good idea of how it's put together though.

Well, due to work, and side jobs, I finally had time to work on my tractor. I put in the new ignition switch and tried it out. Glow plugs lit up and heated, dash lights are working. Still won't start! Putting out lots of black smoke, and it almost starts. I put a tire valve in the fuel cap and pressurized it while cranking. It's raining today, so I can't do anything on it. I'm going to call Valley Power tomorrow and talk to Bill or Lemuel, to see if I can get some information on timing this thing. --------------John

Did you do a compression test on the tractor yet? Mine was running just fine until I parked it last fall between projects and it hasn't run since. A compression test a couple of weeks back revealed very low compression. Before I tear it apart looking for cracked pistons I'm going to test again to see if I get the same results.

No, not yet. Probably going to do that next. Maybe tonight if the weather stays decent. ------John
