Tractor
John Deere 970
Hi Gang,

This past week I finished outfitting my 1994 John Deere 970 with my first attachments: An MX5 cutter and an H165 front end loader. While I was at my local John Deere dealership, I realized that for the money I invested in a 1994 970 with 165 hours on it ($12,900), a new FEL ($5,000) and a new cutter ($2700), I could have had a brand new 3xxx series tractor. A used implement reseller here in NC told me I sunk WAY too much money into this tractor, and I suppose he could be right... but I am extremely happy with my decision. I like the MFWD 970 as much or more as I like any new 3xxx or 4xxx tractor and while there is risk involved in purchasing any used tractor over a new one (if for no other reason than the warranty), ultimately I saved a little money over purchasing an equivalent tractor new. I had the added benefit of doing all the maintenance on the used tractor and in the process, learned quite a bit about how they work. I still have lots to learn (especially on the hydraulics), but I love to learn. I still need to digitize the 970 service manual I purchased so I can actually read the thing on my iPad.

Anyway... I thought I would show all of you the finished product. You'll find the pictures of my 970 (without attachments) and my purchase story in another thread in this section. I really appreciate all the help everyone has been here.

Joe

As long as you are happy, who cares what anyone else thinks? Besides, a 20 year old tractor may be better quality than a new one - is the transmission housing cast aluminum?

I'm not sure you paid too much. It's a prime price, for sure, but it's a dad-gum nice tractor that will last you a long time. I have a 1994 670 and love the heck out of it. I genuinely believe they made them better then than they do now -- not just because I have one.
That's a rig to be very proud of. I'm proud for you. Now... go scratch it! :)

I do believe it is steel from the look and feel of it. I will double check tomorrow.

When I walked into a JD dealer with $20k they showed me a new 2xxx tractor/loader. What you got for that same money is way nicer IMHO. You did fine.

That is a really nice setup. It's in incredible shape!
Put a modern folding rops on it and tell people it's one of the first new all steel 2016 retro models coming out!

Enjoy!

Mine is definitely steel. After looking at the carnage in the link you posted, maybe 21 year old iron wasn't a bad choice. :D

I cringed when I looked at the gaping hole in the aluminum transmission. Yikes!

Yours may outlast a new one! I bought a new Kioti recently, and believe it may outlast me....

That is a fine setup you put together JD 970. You will be able to get a lot done with it.

I wish my 41 year old 2030 looked that good. I have over 4,000 hours. Yours is not even broke in yet. Enjoy! The mistake I made was paying $4000 to fix it when the HI/LO went out. I should have junked it and bought another tractor.

So, what does your to do list look like? Hope you enjoy checking them off.

Divide the cost over the life of that tractor and the cost is nill.

Good looking rig.
Have fun with it.

There are actually two lists: regular maintenance and one-off tasks.

Regulagular maintenance:

Cut two acre pasture
Harrow driveways
Move hay
Forest maintenance
Move and spread gravel on driveways

One-off tasks:

Landscape yard
Fill holes in pasture
Build trails around property

I am certain I will find things to use the tractor for that I haven't even thought of yet. One thing is for sure, now that I have a loader, I am retiring my wheelbarrow. :)

On edit: I should add that we have 22 acres. 2-3 of pasture, 3-4 of pond, and the rest is old growth forest.

So, what does your to do list look like? Hope you enjoy checking them off.

Having only 165 hours and having been well cared for is more important than the year the tractor was made. You look to be all set with a good investment. More pictures would be appreciated.

Nice setup!

How is the MX5 working for you? I'm considering one for my JD 3520.

The MX5 is working out very well. I was a bit concerned that it would have some difficulty cutting the bamboo on our property but it cut right through 1.5 inch bamboo like butter. I only have about 6 hours on it so far, but I am definitely pleased with its performance thus far.

Nice setup!
