I sprayed them with foaming Ortho, let it set a couple of days, since we had some rain here, then when I did go back to finish it off, it was already done. Laying under the tree, in peices, no hornets, and I just ran over it with the bota........paper dust now!

Danny,

Those are definitely Bald Face, around here we call them Ball Nest hornets. I used to work in a machine shop and every so often one would come buzzing through the shop and into the large plate glass window in front of the shop. We used to use TECH rubber and tire cleaner on the little beggars and the results were rather interesting. Once sprayed the hornet would curl up and shove his stinger directly into his head and as they say the rest is history. I think the tire cleaner caused them to curl up quickly and then I am sure they were so ticked off /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifthey just went to stinging whatever was close and unfortunately that was their head /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. If you can wait until cool weather some of the craft shops will give pretty good money for a nest that is in good shape...less the hornets of course!

I just saw this on one our local Sunday news programs
The Gotcha Sprayer

Inspector I'll bet if you use that gadget on a large hornets nest that they will follow the pole back to the ground. Then it will rightfully be called the GOTCHA Sprayer for sure! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The folks around here like to wrap a garbage bag around them at night, cut the nest down, and shoot it full of polyurethane spray. If it works out right, you get a shiny hornets nest with a couple of dead hornets stuck to the outside and people will pay a ridiculous amount of money to keep it in their home!!! I have heard that some of the bigger nests bring several hundred dollars!!

Now you tell me...............Revenge was fun too though! Those suckers never knew what hit them, and I got to run over the nest with the bota!

My hornets must be mutants or resistant to Ortho spray. Used an entire can of the spray on a nest in one of my apple trees several nights ago but that hasn't stopped them. There are still hornets flying into and out of the nest.

I sprayed the nest after 10:00 PM. Was that too early at night? Might it be better to spray even later so it is still night but closer to dawn? I am thinking that a pre-dawn spraying might affect more of the hornets as they leave the nest in the morning and the spray has not yet evaporated????

The foaming Ortho hornet killer did the trick for this hive. They came out falling on the ground, dead! I am sure some did not even get out as the broken nest showed signs of dead bees also. Are you sure that what you are dealing with are bees, and are they named on the label as being effective on what you have? I sprayed this one about 7 pm.
