<font color="green">DannyD,

As I sprayed the nest, none of the hornets exited. It was much later at night than when you sprayed so I am starting to think that right after dusk may be a better time to spray instead of waiting much later. The instructions on the can mention after dusk and before dawn. I took that to mean at night but maybe the hornets were too much at rest when I sprayed and you need to hit them when they are inactive but not too inactive.

Someone here at work suggested using my son's shotgun to take out the nest!

Lots have mentioned the shotgun method, and while it would be sweet, it is not practical in my situation as the neighbors behind the place might not like their windows shot out. I got them about 7 pm I think it was, only a few came out, most just died in the nest. T?he nest broke up some and what was on the ground, I ran over with the bota.

Just took out a nice-sized baldfaced hornet nest that was built just a little too close to the porch and walkways for comfort, but just a little too far for the aerosol cans. FYI I find the "Raid" brand wasp&hornet has about 50% more reach than the Ortho foam. Both are instant kills but neither could reach this nest from my redoubt (screen porch) - and I wasn't going up a ladder to spray.

Decided to try sevin - mixed up a small 1/2 gallon batch at 4 oz/gallon concentration, pumped the (2 gallon) tank sprayer up high and adjusted the nozzle for the tightest stream I could get. It was just enough to allow me to 'rain' on the nest and surrounding leaves. A few hornets came out but didn't get too excited. They must have figured it was just raining - and since I was 25 feet away - not a threat. In fact, while I was soaking the nest other hornets were coming and going about their business. Not an instant kill but next day the nest seemed just as dead. Time will tell if any hornets or larva survived. Since the sprayer has about twice the range of the spray cans this gave me another option for those just out-of-reach nests.
