lets see, it was $2.50 9 days ago. Now over $3.20 around here. So people will be happy when it goes back down to below $3 (to $2.99)...still up almost $0.40....

To me, it is still a huge profit since a drum of oil was around $24 back in 2003. Now over $70....Not a bad profit in 2-years.

AGREE 100% someone still has to explain why gas went up so fast on bad new , but now that the news is better, why is not gas going down as fast as it went up?

I was talking to the local guy who runs the marina and used to sell gas, but didn't this year due to flood damage. He led me to believe that selling gas is not a money maker. You have to sell so much quantity to make anything from it. He also said the owner of the local Exon / store said that it's hardly worth his while to sell gas. I believed him ...but now I'm wondering if he wasn't BS'ing me bigtime. If wholesale gas is less than 2.50 a gallon and they are selling for over 50 cents more a gallon, they gots to be making money. I plead ignorance and gullibility for my previous post saying they needed to raise prices as soon as they heard wholesale prices were going up so that they can refill their tanks. Seems we are being taken to the cleaners by these crooks!

That's pretty much the case with most independently owned but branded stations. Most have markups on regular that averages 15 cents per gallon. If the dealer is a convenience store too then the gas sales should more than cover his overhead. If not then it is most likely not worth it to sell gas since the independent dealer is usually responsible for all maintenance on the the non-company owned equipment. The company owned equipment for branded stations is normally just the pumps.

One advantage to having branded gas is that the gas company usually covers the credit card charge fees which run 3% to 4% of sales and it gives the store the use of the cc machine for store only purchases up to a certain limit.

As a former convenience store/gas station owner I can tell you that without a cost analysis your mileage will vary.

( Forker says the oil companies bear responsibility for recent shortages, because they have held back on investment in new production for years due to a fear of a price collapse. ``It could just be a big scam – `Let's just restrict the supply along with the OPEC countries and we'll all get rich together' '' he said.

The quote is from the link Mike provided above. Totally Outragous.
Mike, what happened to that cool Godfather of Soul avatar? That was funny. Made me think of looking for the Nick Nolte one from his dui a few years back.

Mad,
Thanks for the confirmation. I'd guess the mom and pop's made some on these latest gas prices, but the Exon's of the world obviously are making a fortune.
