Hernia surgery

Hope you heal fast!

I go back to work on Monday. I've been off for two months with just a broken finger. I'm still gonna be on restricted duty for another month.

I was pretty much confined to the house for 8 weeks with a broke ankle. 6 weeks plus a few days no weight bearing, about a week longer before I could stand any amount of walking and probably another month before I could walk normal. It still hurts sometimes and will probably never be the same. It really sucked. I don’t see how able bodied people can stand sitting around all the time.

As you know I'm a para, I broke my tibia and fibula last March getting off my tractor, I just got the okay to remove the cast, sucked for 6 months but it could be worse..

I had right first right inguinal done in '62, left one in '78, and redone in '83 at Shouldice Hernia Hospital in Ontario. No mesh in those days, and four days after the Canadian repair, I was lifting my pre-schooler through a window to get us back into the house on return to MI. ;) (six rows of SS wire and you're semi-conscious during the op ... it was then.)

In 2015 my right inguinal was coming apart. I saw a specialist with creds from Ohio State and MSU. He asked how long my navel was flush, neither in or out. "As far back as I can remember?"

"We'll fix that too". I'd seen the lawsuit trolls seeking any who'd been sewn up with older mesh versions that were too thick and lacked resilience, causing problems post-surgery. Those days were gone, and Dr Mueller made me a new geezer.

My recovery, again, was a matter of days to return to normal life .... and 6 months or more before a cough or a sneeze didn't hurt so much I wish I could stifle them, which hurt more if I tried to.

The Man419, I hope your recovery is swift, and for others, if you smoke you will take longer to heal. I had all my surgeries before I quit 50 yrs of tocacco.

Both my meshes have been trouble free (left years ago and right last year) I guess I lucked out.

Well as an update.... recovery no so good. I also have afib (under control) which acted up on Monday afternoon. So I got to go in Tuesday morning for a cardioversion. Basically getting the heart shocked similar to a heart attack. That put things back into shape. It is likely the after effects of the anesthesia which caused me to flip into afib.

Good times.

^^ Yikes, have you had that happen before?

I had my operation in 2007. Recovery was BORING. I walk or hike everyday, so it was agonizing to do nothing. And there is very little on TV that I care to watch. Hang in there.

I've been reading up on hernia repairs so this thread is quite timely. One thing I've come across is that surgeons want people to be under 200# before they do surgery. That's all well and good, and I'd like to be there, but it's not likely to happen anytime soon. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is heavier than they should be, so what did your doctor tell you? Have to lose weight first or do the surgery anyway? Any warnings they told you about the surgery?
