HF Three Point Log Splitter

Ok My chance to ask dumb question. I am not anywhere near my tractor (70 mi away). It is a NH T1520. Does anyone know if it has the remotes to be able to use that HF splitter? (sometimes I think I know things until I talk to SWMBO).. thanks guys.:thumbsup:

If you bought your tractor new and did not order rear remotes, you would not have them. New Holland does not give them away. They are between $500 and $600 each. Did you get a loader? You can use the loader quick connects. Disconnect the lift connectors and attach longer hoses to a log splitter on the 3PH. You'd have to bungee the joystick in the required position while using the splitter.

Thanks Jinman. You confirmed what I thought. I looked over the weekend and you are right. But good point on the loader connects. What position would the joystick have to be in? And that wouldn't hurt anything with the loader? Thanks again.

Set the loader bucket flat on the ground after you move it where you need to use the splitter. Disconnect the loader quick connects for loader lift (not bucket curl/dump) and attach them to the splitter. The loader quick connects are one size smaller than the normal rear remotes. I think you'll find they are 3/8" and you'll have to have the proper size male adapters. After you hook up the hoses, pull the joystick all the way back as you would to lift the loader. Use a bungee cord to hold it in this position. Find a convenient place to wrap the bungee around like the ROPS. This will send hydraulic flow to the open center valve on the splitter. Operate the splitter valve to make sure it goes the right direction. If it does, you are good to go for splitting. Set the tractor rpm to about 2000 and split wood.

If the splitter does not move in the right direction when you operate the valve, remove the bungee and reverse the loader quick-connects. If it were a remote valve, all you would have to do is bungee the lever into the opposite position, but with the joystick, if you bungee into the forward position, you will most likely put the circuit into "float" and have no flow to the splitter. That's why you need to put it in the far back/lift position.

No, I'm watching craigslist for a decent priced single axle trailer I can also use to haul the Mule. A 10-footer would work, but most of them are 8-feet. If you don't want to be able to also haul a bunch of split wood on the trailer, you might just look for a small boat trailer and covert it for the splitter. One of these from HF would work, but you might not want to spend that much money.

I bought a little boat trailer once for $75 and it would have been perfect for this. Of course, being the redneck I am, I figure I could carry the splitter in the FEL bucket to where I want to use it and sit it on top of a stack of three pallets to get it up to working height.

I was thinking of something narrow with 4 wheels. Do you think something like this would work?

Don, I think that would be perfect, especially if you never plan to take it out on the county road. You can fill those tires with slime or even buy solid ones now so your mesquite thorns don't cause you a lot of grief. If you line the bed of that with plywood to spread the load when you drop rounds onto the splitter, it will probably last as long as you need. The weakest spot is probably the axles.

Just curious. I was about ready to pull the trigger on the 3 pt splitter and went to HF website and they did not show it in the catalog. Has anyone else noticed this? Maybe they don't sell it anymore. That would be a bummer since you all seem to like yours.:thumbsup::thumbsup:
