CM, You know MikePA is a Moderator? I just bought a CS-450 16" blade today with my 20% off coupon..:licking:

Do now. Who did you buy it from? How much with coupon? (Its bar not blade...) ;)

How can you stereotype like that? How do you know members here with top handles do not read or heed safety guidelines? You are ridiculous.

For the record, I don't agree with CM about the necessity of sarcasm, and name calling on both sides of this is juvenile.

That said, saying, "most... have little clue as to the real dangers" isn't stereotyping. If he said that everyone who isn't a tree expert had no clue, that would be a hasty generalization, but at least this time, that isn't what was said.

Time for everyone to get their undies out of a bundle.

Saws are dangerous. All of them.

Almost everyone out there could benefit from more safety training than they already have in this area and others.

Almost no one (who isn't required by OSHA) wears all of the recommended safety gear when running saws. Again, we could almost all benefit from improvement in this area.

Stay safe out there.:)

I agree that everyone could benefit from a training course. Unfortunately non of the main brands or associations run chainsaw courses here and if they are they aren't well advertised. I have a friend who is sponsored by Stihl how does them but they are promoted for paid workers not the average punter. Anyone can cut with a chainsaw, but a little training goes a long way, especially when you are dealing with hung up trees, large logs under stresses, felling and even how to clear a large tree across roads or tracks. There are little tricked and tips that help you avoid pinched bars and of course good safety technic.
It would be great if we could get off the top handle saw stuff there is a lot of opposing, let's all agree to disagree.
I was given a Pulan saw once...and I did lots of pullin before it would start, I wore that saw out from brand new in 6 months.

I've got a Poulan 42cc 18" that's about 6 years old. Factory reconditioned, as I recall. I cut about 6cords per year with it. Starts fine. Runs fine. Original spark plug has never been removed. I cleaned the air filter for the first time last week. I also have a Poulan string trimmer/pole saw combo. Starts fine, runs fine, original spark plug, etc.... I've never adjusted anything on either of them.

I've had no problems with their products and they are fine for light duty work such as I do.

They do take a lot of priming.7 presses.

My Pulan didn't die I ended up selling it to a mate that was doing some light garden work, pretty much gave it away. At the time I was doing some clearing work on another property I owned so I was well and truely expecting too much from the saw.

Its a light duty saw, not like a Echo or Stihl would be.

I went up today and cut up a wind damaged ash tree. It was broken over about twenty feet up and the top was lying on the ground with it's butt still attached to the stub. I under cut blocks near the top and worked my way back towards the stub until I had it free hanging from the stub. Then I cut the stub and the remainder of the top down being very aware of which way it wanted to fall with the top log hanging off the stub. Less then a tank of gas to get it down and all blocked up. 455 Husqvarna rancher with a 20 inch bar. Put it in the bucket and hauled it to the splitter next to the house and had it split and piled next to the furnace in a couple of hours.
There are lots of good saws out there but when the one you have in hand is sharp and running right it is a pleasure to run and you will think three times before you will try another.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I second that. I'm also good with no further discussion/argument over top handle saws, etc.
I will also say that there is never too much to learn about safe handling of chainsaws and similar equipment. Best practices prevail, and reduce risk, injury and possible death, from careless or unsafe methods of handling.
