Ford 550 Backhoe/loader & Ford 4000
Looking forward to reading and being on this forum site. I have a Ford 4000 tractor and Ford 550 Backhoe/ Loader.

Hi,
I just recently replaced all of the hydraulic lines on the backhoe system and 4 lines on the loader system. The loader worked fine even after bypassing the backhoe lines while it was removed in order to use the loader only. After attaching the backhoe system back onto the tractor and bleeding the hydraulic lines to get the backhoe system to work, I believe that I may have over stressed the loader system. I believe I heard something 'give way' but was not sure as there were no leaks anywhere.

After the loader stopped working, I continued to bleed the rear backhoe system to finally get the backhoe working again. So now that the backhoe system works like new the loader still does not work. I thought I may have blown a seal in the loader valve body, so i had the valve body rebuilt by a hydraulic equipment shop. However, I do not know if they performed the rebuild on it correctly. In moving the valve body to the down position it appears to have two setting on it. The regular forward motion that returns to neutral position and then further forward motion that locks it in place and makes a hard snapping sound when pulled back to get it to return to the neutral position.

1. The valve body never did this before and I was wondering what your thoughts are on this issue?

2. In addition, do you think the valve body was even the original problem causing the loader not working and the backhoe system functioning properly?

3.a. Is it possible for the backhoe system to work if the main hi and low pressure supply and return lines were reversed when reconnecting the backhoe system?
3.b. Would the backhoe system still operate like it should with the flow reversed?

4. Is there something about the hydraulic pump (something broken internally) that would let the backhoe operate and not the loader?

I would appreciate your sincere and honest comments, analysis and recommendations.
Thank you

Welcome. Not much help on hydraulics. I can replace a few parts that's about it. I can also give moral support. :)

If you can catch an audience with some of the experienced mechanics on here you may get eh help you are looking for.
