Hidden costs of buying a tractor

As with so many things, the reverse is true too...

10 years ago, I met a woman that was horse-crazy, had been since her teen years.

At that time I had a comfy little house in the suburbs on a 6000 sq foot lot, 10 km from work. Life as I knew it was about to change..

Now we have a new, bigger house in the country, 50 km from work on 10 acres in God's Country. I have an ATV, a couple trailers, and a tractor with an ever-growing list of implements. Add to that most of the gas and electrical powered machinery known to man to maintain said country nirvana.

This was the barn building year, a few years ahead of schedule due to unforeseen circumstances.

Would I trade back? Not for a minute.. I wonder now how I put up with suburban life. I used to be a country boy a lot of years ago, now I guess I am again.

My first tractor, a used JD 750 cost the following; 1 horse, 1 horse barn, 1 horse trailer, 1 mile of 4 strand high tensile fence around horse pasture. 15 years later no horse, no trailer, no fence, pasture is hayfield and 2nd tractor stays in horse barn. Wife just bought sewing machine, but has not had time to use it. You have to have patience! :D Willie Jones

The deal that I made with the wife unit of over 30 years, was I could buy the tractor, but I had to spend over 500 bucks for a new mixer. On the up side, the stuff coming out of the oven, is great. Yes, over 500 bucks for a mixer, but it has 3 PTO's.

My wife has 2 modern sewing machines, one of them is computerized. You can link to it with a computer and upload patterns for it to embroider. If you can change the threads, it's pretty easy to do.

She also has a surger (spelling). Not sure what it does, but then again I don't have to know. She also has enough thread and fabric to make the fall wardrobe for Macy's! Nothing wrong with that.

I believe it's a serger. My wife has an Elna with one.

I have an old Singer treadle converted to ac motor that I use to do leather repairs in the shop. I believe the old Singer would sew thread through a wood board.

I was given an old Maytag wringer washer machine that I use for shop rags. Can't beat the old stuff. Rock solid and stone simple.

Consider the fact that you got off real easy. ths is what i had to buy the wife cause i got my new tractor...which by the way was her idea. burrrr

See, you guys are going at this all wrong. This is what happens when you combine paychecks. :D

The wife and I have been together for 24 years (married 15) and in all that time everything has gotten paid 50-50. Personal stuff like sewing machines/tractors and such gets taken on separate. In other words, if I want an implement for the tractor or whatever, I better hang more sheetrock. If she wants that sewing machine she better fix more braces. This may seem strange to some of you but I can honestly say that we NEVER fight about money.

But then if she fixes your underwear does she send you a bill???.. Oh , and by the way, dont say this too loud, as shes the one earning most of the money lately....seeing as my electrical business has slowed down soooooo much in the past few years. Man its sad. I made more in less than1 month 4 years ago than ive made all year this season.

Yes Pete Judd my wife got one of those $500 mixers with ptos also and attachments are $250 , but makes great pies and as long as her attachments are only less than 10% of what mine cost , I figure I am still ahead..............oh and now she knows what a pto is too.
