High Bay Fluorescent for Arena

come on, that chart is showing 90-95% retention for florescent thru its life (20-30,000 hours). Metal Halide can drop 50% during their 5,000-9,000 hr rated life. Dont get me wrong, i love MH lighting, but im starting to love the high output T5's more.

I just put one in my shop over my work table.

Yea! That is one of the best features of MH lights! :thumbsup:

Most of the drop off in output happens when they are nearly ready for replacement. Brand new ones are brighter than rated, they get dimmer a bit straight away, are steady for most of their life, and get dim before they need replaced.

In order to plan bulb replacement I just make note of dim bulbs. :thumbsup:

Guess I'm cheap I lit my 40x64 garage/shop with 4 mercury vapor dusk to dawns total cost $16x4=$64 bucks

covered the sensor with electrical tape put em on a switch and works for me.
Lit up the whole place.

If they fail I may replace them with large compact floursents ow that the cost of them are onthe way down.

Thats about the same cost as i can get from my supply house, but these are T8 lights, and i can get T5 fixtures for about $10/ each more than this price. Below say 15 feet these would do OK, above 15' id use the T5 fixtures.

t8 = 32 watt lamps
t5 = 54 watt lights

if you look at Home Depot lighting in their store, they have for the most part replaced their HID metal Halide lighting with T5 light fixtures which have an on-board switchable light ballast that can cut the output in half during daylight hours. I have been told that these fixtures can pay for themselves in as little as 2-3 years due to the fact that there running 24/7. After 2 years theres a net savings to the store over what they would have paid with the metal halide fixtures. Again this is what the Public utility here in Idaho have determined.

I've only got 12' ceilings. So I'm guessing these will be ok.. Besides this is just to get some light in there for a year or so. By then I'm hoping T5's will be more readily available.

t8's are best for 12' and under. should give good light retention.

Gonna look at Angieslist to find an electrician to hook up load center and some these lights.
