Sure this has been posted before but I can't find a reference to the subject.

When I start my 09, 300 hrs, CK30 I get a high pitch squeal from the engine. When I lower the RPM to minimum the squeal disappears. Whether hot or cold engine.
After a few seconds I can increase the RPM or when I raise the FEL the squeal is usually gone. Fanbelt?, any ideas?

Yes , first thing to check is the belts.

Mine does it sometimes too. Probably a pulley or the alternator on its way out.

Have you ever adjusted the fan/alternator/crank pulley belt? I have an 2004 CK30hst. Mine stretched pretty good when newer needing yearly adjustments. After 12 years, it was time for a new one being no more adjustment left. The belt is rather small in size but only runs the alternator and water pump/fan. It's a metric size and hard to match up in a parts store. Easy adjustment from the alternator bracket.

Yes, the belt to alternator would be my first check too. Often the alternator will load, to charge the battery after starting and that cause more resistance to turning and the belt slips.

I once had a squeal only when starter was engaged, it was the starter bearings.

Classic symptom of loose Alternator belt...
Adjust or replace.

Report back for others' future reference.

Yes indeedy that was the problem. Almost an inch of play when I pulled on the belt. Loosened the alternator swing arm, stuck a crowbar between engine and alternator, a slight pull, alternator moved about half inch, retightened the swing arm bolt and squeaky is gone.

Thanks to all who responded. I suspected the problem from the start but a bit of reinforcement from knowledgeable minds calms the nerves. In the past we used to rub a bit of paraffin wax on the side of the belt. Worked for awhile but from a hand's point of view - it's scary down in there.

BTW how in the **** would you get the belt past the fan if replacement was necessary. Looks like a pretty tight fit in there.

You can get a belt with a smaller diameter over the fan by going between the blades down to the hub with the top, put as much behind the fan on the way down, then push it up to the hub on the bottom and work the other side over. Kind of hard to describe but will be obvious once you see it.

I wrote the procedure up for a Kioti owner here:

In the 'past' Generator belts ran looser and were wider. In the 'now' Alternator belts run tighter and are narrow with less contact area on the sheaves to handle the higher loads - thus squealing, from slipping, if not tight.

Is your battery original? If so it is prolly on it's way out of this life. It most likely gets deeply discharged during starting which is putting a heavier load on the alternator to charge it back up again. And of course, a bad belt doesn't help either. B.
