High vs low range.....whats your policy?

In my experience high is almost useless except for travel to and from wherever I'm going. Maybe a total flat grade would be different.
I do everything else in low.

I'm often challenged with turtle or rabbit H, M, L. I have a hi or low option for each of my 3 HST ranges giving me a total of 6 combinations.

Wonder if it's better on the HST to be in rabbit M or turtle H?

There is a button that will automatically go to turtle if engine lugs down but HST will go into relief in H and has never gone into turtle by itself when in H range.

Thanks for all the input guys. I measured the slope tonight on my hill and played around a little more too experimenting with H, L, RPM's, forward and reverse, and approach angle. First off the slope (as measured on my inclinometer app) says between 26-30 degees depending on how the phone lays in the dirt. granted a phone app isnt going to be an exact science but it give an idea. that being said its no wonder High range doesnt want to climb such a steep slope. I did ramp up the RPM's to max which i dont usually do and try again but im inpatient i guess with the whole less pedal is more idea and she just bogged down again and kinda stopped. I did not mash the petal this time like last night so the engine never stalled like before. I just let up and back down. If i hit the hill at a semi angle or get a little run at it straight up she does try to climb it a little better in high but the tractor screams at me real loud so i didn't push it to much. I then tried the hill at about a 10 oclock position and she did better but still real noisy and loud while doing so. I tried both high and low in reverse too. high faired much better in reverse than forward but ultimately she bogged down that direction too. Low on the other hand left me nice hole in my yard so i pressed the diff lock and now i have matching holes in my yard. LOL. Guess ill be hard pressed to find a way to run out of power in low range huh? anyways thanks for all the responses guys, makes a feller feel better when he runs into situations to have alot of other guys who have already been there put in their two cents....

I use low for mowing. I have hills to go up and down and low holds back better. I use low for when I am working it real hard. Most work is done in low. I use high to for snow removal with the rear blade. I also use high some when I touch up the gravel on the driveway with the rear blade or rake.

Hydros will scream. That's what hydros do. Gear tractors don't do that. As long as the pressure relief on your hydro is not kicking out a lot let the hydro scream all it wants. I spent 4 hours brush cutting chest high pasture today. The hydro screamed like a stuck hog. Engine temp stayed low. Tractor in the barn ready to mow tomorrow.

I have been moving lots of dirt lately. The from area is about 300 yards away from the pile area. Digging is a low range affair....it will let you know if you forget to put it in low. What I do is put the bucket down (I have a PTB) make my scoop. Usually an over full bucket, then back away. Then when I start to change directions I will put it into high and start to where the "spoil" pile is. Getting there in low took just too long. I am not flat out by any means, just a itty bit of movement on the peddle is all it takes. Then depending on if I am dumping where I can reach I will just leave it in high, if I need to climb on the hill a little I will have to put it back into low then make that climb and dump the bucket.

I use high quite a bit here lately. There is another area I am digging on and that is only about 50 feet away....so I stay in low for that.

When it's in high range and bogs down, ease off the pedal until the RPMs come back up. If you have to ease off so much that you aren't moving very fast then it"s time to downshift to a lower range.

For me........I usually start a job in high and then listen to the engine to decide to shift or whatever. If it is a grunt job or someplace where I need more power, well, I just start out in low......just gotta think a bit ahead of time and LISTEN to what is going on with the engine. I prefer high because L takes to much work for the engine to get the job done more easily in H.............God bless.......Dennis
