Homade cant hook (with photos)

Sorry about the first thread had problems uploading the photos here.

In anycase I decided I wanted a cant hook and made one this evening. It was made from a drop from an old rollcage 1.75" OD 1.5" I'd tubing. The bottom 4" is 1.5" bar stock drilled and tapped on the bottom 3/8-16 to hold the "grabber" part, made two versions out of 1/2" stainless steel. I also was not sure if I just wanted a cant hook or a timber jack, so I drilled and tapped two more holes and made the "jack" part too.

Was not exactly sure where to put the pivot so I made different locations for the "claw" to mount. The extra grade 8 bolt at the to end is just incase I need it if the aircraft ball detent doesn't hold up (it is quite strong but hollow).

The key to getting the paint to work was this contraption.

Let it "roll" while I figured the rest out and it worked (I did bang the can enough to free the bearing inside first.

What is that built from? Looks very simple and very practical. Any more details?

1 3/4" .125 tubing, 1.5" bar stock at the bottom, 1/2" bar stock for the contact point, 1x1/4" cold rolled for the pivot clevis and cut the hook from 3/8" steel.

Some logging trivia -- as shown in the last photo it's a "timber jack". Take off the kickstand and it's a "cant hook". Put on a pointed tip and it would be a "peavey". Logging tools have funny names, that go way back. There are dozens of others.

So for bonus points, maybe you can make a pointed tip and make this a three-way tool!!
