HOME DEPOT AUTO CHECKOUT

/ HOME DEPOT AUTO CHECKOUT #11
The Home Depots close to Wash D.C., near my work, installed self checkouts last year. At first they didn't work very good, eventually they got better, but lately half of the self checkouts are always broken. The other issue with Home Depot is they either find the biggest idiot employee or a person who can't speak a lick of English and assign them to the self check out area. We have self check outs at the local Wal-Mart which work pretty good and the great thing is you don't have to be subjected to the delays caused by all that yapping, I don't know why cashiers just can't ring your stuff and shut up. The newest thing we have, is at the local grocery store, you can scan your own stuff as you pick it up in the isle, then you just go up front, pay you bill and off you go. A real time saver.

I'll usually use the auto check out, because it is faster.

Definitely don't think HD or Lowes is always cheaper. I recently got my window quotes. My local lumber yard store was almost 10% cheaper for same product (Milgard), had 20 of the 25 pieces in stock, and FREE delivery this Tues.

the krogers around here have had self checkout for a long time but the only ones i use are at lowes or HD. those regular lines seem to go very slow.

i think for any major purchase, especially if you're buying in quantity, the phone is the best way to track down the best price.

I have no problem with the SELF-SERVICE checkout system at Home Depot. I'm sure it's the same type of equipment -- I'd suspect most problems are user error.

Used it for the first time last weekend. Guy in front of me never touched the machine (checkout lady did, then moved him to another register) then the checkout lady took my product at the "self checkout". I joked with her that I thought this was supposed to be a self checkout isle, and I could tell she wasn't having a good day. She moved me to another register to chek me out.

Not a good experience, would think you'd work out the kinks before you bring them into the store.

But, as someone once told me, "I rather pay someone $20/hour and have a $5 headache than pay someone $5/hour and have a $20 headache".

Self check-outs are another method of anti-immigration. The machines replace the $6 hourly non-English speaking employees and force the customer to do all the work. :D

Lowes doesn't have the auto check out and if I have a choice, I always go to Lowes before Home Depot.

The nearest Lowe's has had self checkout since it opened. Yesterday I made an error by swiping an item too many times. This happened because only 1 fitting out of 12 had a barcode label so I was swiping it & putting another in the bag. My mistake. I'd swiped my Lowe's card before I realized the mistake. Asked the attendant for a correction, she coundn't so called a supervisor. She advised that the error cound not be corrected & I'd have to complete the transaction & go to the refund desk which was understaffed & had a line also. I advised that there was a second option, I did not sign the transaction, left everything on the checkout machine, & went across the street to Home Depot. Oddly the fittings were slightly cheaper there.

Dang near two decades ago I interviewed and was given a job offer at a company that was making these automated registers. Did not take the job for a variety of reasons but one was that I thought the technology was not mature enough and risky. They had some of these checkouts at supermarket near my house and I tried to use them a few times. It was fine for things with a bar code but if you had produce, forget it. It was just too error prone. And to pay you had to go to a person! The only reason I would use it was to keep the idiot bag boys away from my groceries. I can't stand to have people bag my food. I don't know why the can't get it right but they dont. I do it myself even now and chase off the bagger.

The new Lowes that just opened has these things. I won't use them. I tried but its takes too much time. The problem I had last time is they wanted me to put all of my bags on the stupid bag holders until I was done. That is not the way I bag. I fill a big and put it in the cart. That messed up the system. I'm guessing they do this for theft prevention.

If the stores gave me 10% off of what I buy then maybe I would learn how to be THEIR cashier. Since using the self serve registers just increases profit or chance there of I'll use a real person.

Dan

I just go where the line is shortest, its really that simple. Both methods of checkout work well for me. No federal case for me. I never go to box stores or even hardware stores to get personal help. I know what I want before I go there and most of the time already know what I'm doing. I don't expect many 20 or even 30 year olds to be able to help me in most of the areas construction. Those with the knowledge are probably not going to be found at Home Depot, Lowes or even Ace. I do feel bad though for those that want to do something themselves only to get frustrated with the results at most of these facilities.

Must have something to do with the area. We have a few years old HD and a 1 year old Lowes. Neither one has self checkout. The Wal Mart next to the Lowes has self Check Out which I use when the other registers have a line at them. They work very well. When there is a problem they have an employee that know how to solve the problem quickly.
