I have no problem with the SELF-SERVICE checkout system at Home Depot. I'm sure it's the same type of equipment -- I'd suspect most problems are user error.

I got hornswaggled into using those things three times. Nobody would use them; there were long lines at the regular register. The attendant says to try it; I did WITH THIER help. It was a PIA. Three times, three seperate people. Nothing but problems. One of those times thing cou;dn't resolve the issue, so I ended up back at the regular cashier.

They can have those goofy machines.

Of course, I'm not that impressed with the box stores either. Pushing those silly carts around with 12' lumber, IF you can find the right stuff and sort through the twisted knotty stuff. I like a real hardware store or lumber yard; a lumber yard where you pull your truck right up to the lumber...

Must be an El Dorado County type clientle using the machines. Us folks up North have it all figured out. :D

I like H/D fast, easy and out the door I go. Lowe's I do not like because of the last 4 degits of C/Card but still beats standing behind some one who never thinks far enough ahead to have C/Card ready or check book and or look for ever for their money. Just my 2 cent worth

Do you prefer the first 4 digits? Not quite sure why this is a problem.

Well, back to the same HD yesterday and the the self checkout line was taped off (closed). Asked the cashier about it and she said it had something to do with money and how they access it for the machines??

Of course, this is the same Home Depot that told me they had 2,000 pieces of landscaping timber, sent me to 3 different parts of the store to find the timber, then admitted that although the computer showed it had 2k of them, they didn't have them or at least had no clue where they were.

I've been using the self check at the local HD for a couple of years now, with mixed results.......
In my case, I'm using a corporate CC, so it requires human intervention at some point - why, I don't know because they never ask for an ID or anything - the attendant just pushes a button on her console, I sign the ticket and I'm gone. But, that said, the machines always seem to work fine. GIGO I guess........

I must be incredibly lucky. I always head for the self checkout at HD and WMT even if the regular line is short unless I have something without a bar code such as a few screws. Almost never had a problem. And on the rare occasion I did, the checkout person was right there. (Can't say the same for grocery stores though) Quick scan of the item(s), swipe the card or insert cash, on my way while the people in the regular line are still standing there.

I'll use the pay at the pump at the gas station so I don't get stuck behind the jerk buying, and scratching, lottery tickets in front of me. However, I draw the line at scanning and bagging my own items at Hoe Depot. They have the absolute WORST customer service of any store that is still in existance. Yesterday I had to interrupt 3 old farts talking about their camping trip to ask where I could find an item. The one immediately told me that they were out of that item and didn't know when they'd get any in. Hmm, I told him that the internet said that they had 40 in stock. He told me that the internet is simply wrong. When I asked him to please check his system, he told me that he didn't need to because he KNEW that they didn't have any.

Yup, you guessed, on the way out, I found an entire end cap full of the items I wanted. When I pointed that out to the old farts not 20 feet away, they got smart and told me that there is no way they could memorize everything in the store. So, I fill my cart and find that there is only one lane actually manned by a cashier. The rest are these stinking bag it yourself things. Of course the darn thing can't recognize any item and those it does recognize requires authorization by a not present "representative". Halfway through I said screw it and just left, leaving stuff half bagged and half a cart full. I was met by about 8 or 10 other people on the way out the door who were doing the same thing. It's not much, but I'd say in that 10 minute time frame Hoe Depot lost about $5000 in sales. Take that over and over each day at each store and the entire chain may go under. Besides, if I have to bag my own, I expect a 10% employee discount and benefits!!!

The bottom line for me is that if the store cannot pay someone to take my money, they can just keep their merchandise! I didn't sign on to be their cashier and I won't do it.

P.S. If you go to Home Depot's website and complain about that crap, they send you a $10 gift card to entice you to try them agian. But, the bag it yourself lanes will not accept that card!

Alot of stores in my area now have the scan it yourself checkout's. I refuse to ever use them. Don't care if there is only one live cashier with a line of 20 people, I'll wait for the live person. My personal opinion on it is if I use the automated system I'm puting someone out of a job. I would rather wait in line for the live person and ensure their job security than use the automated system and put someone out of work. There's enough dang automation these day's, I don't need it at the checkout.

Thats right Diesel.
Not only one but more. as generally, one cashier is expected to keep four self serve registers open.Sometimes doesn't make sense to see someone sitting in a chair at the entrance saying welcome etc. and then no one to cash you out.
I too am one of those who had two carts full. with 8 10 2 inch pipes on them, and there were long lines. I waited in the line with a human , only to have the manager come and close it and detour us to the self check out.I looked around and mumbled, left
they had to restock the items.. But the next day I was there at daybreak, and got the stuff. I'm always sure to get the lumber home, and stack it and park the tractor on it for a few days to be sure it doesn't twist..LOL.
However, I do have to say I have had some very helpful people there.
Unfortunately, stores like Wal Mart are trying to deal with the bad publicity about the health insurance, and have decided to go with more Part Time people. this way the numbers look good .
They will report that a certain percent of employees have purchased the insurance. But don't want you to know how many simply cant afford it. They would be better off not working.
The problem all stems from NON UNION.
Remember the store in Canada that was going to go union? Wal Mart simply closed it.
I try not to blame the people that are there, they are only trying to survive.
Today a 2 year veteran of a wal mart here gave two weeks notice, a common practice. He was fired. Nice Nice PR for wally world.
I just try to accept it, and hold down my frustrations.
Al
