My trailwagon brakes were soft and a little spongy new. I drained and bleed them at the 50 hour service and fixed leaks on the rear drums, they were much better after that. BTW, you can get some engine braking if you are free wheeling down a hill if you give it a little gas to engage the clutch, just be careful if you have not locked the rear diff or put it in 4x4 as you will more than likely cause the one tire to slide if the footing is loose.
