Home Flagpole Plans

Moss -

I have been going through the same process for over a year now, although I have decided I want a manufactured pole... not one I build myself. I almost went with a telescoping pole, then looked at 2" sectional poles, and then came to the realization that what I really want is a one piece tapered aluminum pole with a minimum 4" diameter base... probably 25' high. I just really like the looks of a heavy, sturdy pole. The downside, as you mentioned is that the least expensive one I have found to meet my criteria was around $550 delivered... a good price, but beyond my current budget right now. I've been looking at a 2 pole setup at a local apartment complex that they never use. I think i will stop in to see if I can buy and remove them... hopefully I could keep one and sell the other to cover my cost. This thread will be my incentive to pursue it!

Yeah, that's the ultimate home flagpole, but pretty much unrealistic for our budget.

Keep the ideas coming.

I just bought a 20' aluminum pole with 4' x 6' flag, $135? +- complete. I wanted to build my own. As a teen I worked for the town's public works dept. We did a few poles, one for a new cemetary. The elderly man in charge insisted that it be wood, "No **** shiney metal pole clanging away around here, any selfrespecting Mainer would have a wooden flag pole" lol.

So he cut a spruce and peeled it. Always told me that you have to cut the tree under the light of a full moon to peel properly. He let it dry, then painted it white. He put two pieces of heavy channel several feet into cement. They stick up out of the cement 4-5'. Each piece of channel iron is wide enough for the pole to fit between them. We drilled two holes, one at the base of the channel and one near the top. Put the pole into place with the top bolt, then lift the top of the pole and walk it up with a couple ropes to steady it until the bottom bolt can be installed. Worked great, but I just never seem to have time to get one down, so I went with the aluminum. I'll get pics when (if) it's done.

I know this is a 6 year old dead thread, but I decided to bring it back to life.
I am now retired, and living in my last home. I have an
1/2 acre front yard and want a flag pole out in the middle of it
I am leaning to using a 21' piece of 2 1/2" galvanized water pipe, topped with a 10' piece of 2".
I would be sinking a 5' section of PVC pipe into the ground surrounded by concrete, then sliding the pipe into that, leaving me with a 25' flagpole.
The house is out in the country, with no wind blocks for miles. Will this be sturdy enought to stand up to the wind?
Any advise, or comments that would make me reconsider this plan?

Make sure you have a way to get to the top if something happens, There is a thread about a man that had problems doing that.

That was the thought of using pvc in the concrete, and then sliding the pole into it, that way I could always use the end loader to pull the pipe out, make any repairs and then put the pole back into the sleeve.
