Preface: I am conservative, pro-gun and pro-NRA, anti-gun registration, pro-2nd amendment and pro-self defense.
Here's what bothers me about this story. The guy hears someone on the front porch, opens the door and shoots the person where he stands. While there is no doubt in my mind that the bad guy probably would have tried to harm the guy in the house if he got in, it seems to me that this case would be ripe for a law suit since the bad guy didn't break and enter. It was the cop's word agains the word of the "bad gal" as to what happened since the bad guy is dead (I think?).
I always heard that in such a situation, you would be better off, legally, to drag the bad guy inside so there was some evidence that he was going to cause harm.
Reminds me of Biden telling people to shoot through the door with a shotgun if you hear someone on the front porch.
Seems to me that the best course of action in this case would have been to call the police and tell them there was a prowler, then, be ready with the weapon(s) in case they actually did break in.
While I will not argue with your wisdom about calling the police and stand ready if the perp break in, the fact is he opened the door, and when the perp, raised his bat to strike him he was well within his rights to defend himself. The old saw about dragging someone in is exactly the wrong thing to do. This makes you look guilty of murder as you are telling a lie from the get-go and any decent forensic investigator will soon know the truth. But many times people open a door not expecting any harm will come to them and then the attack begins.
