Home made dolly; Where do ya'll get wheels for it?

I have about 20 of the mechanics tool chests in my business mounted on various trucks. These come with very good caster sets that have nver been used, I plan to use these (about 80 of them) in my new shop to make most things mobile. I wondered what I would do with them for a long time.

I have my backhoe, wood chipper, wood splitter, landscape rake and generator all on wood dollies. I recommend going with the larger diameter wheels for ease of rolling on concrete. I try to double the weight of the attachment spread over the load bearing weight of the wheels. 1000 lbs. of attachment = four 500 lb. rated wheels or three 600+ lb. wheels depending on the dolly's configuration. The backhoe's dolly had to be carefully designed as to the overall platform heigth for ease of tractor attachment/detachment. Check the wheel's zerk fittings IN THE STORE for proper thread tapping and alignment. Of the nineteen wheels that I purchased from three different stores for the above attachments, two had bad zerks. Iv'e posted these photos before so doing it again for the OP.

I am going a different route with my dollies. I am going to make them out of wood and then use my pallet Jack (I picked a used one up for $75) to move them around when they are sitting on the floor and use my FEL Fork attachment to put them up on my pallet racking when they are not in use to take advantage of the 16' ceilings in the storage area of my shop. I feel this approach will be less expensive in the long run since I don't have to buy another set of wheels for each implement I buy and less upkeep since I only have to maintain the wheels on the pallet jack instead of who knows how many by going the other route. Just my $0.02, take it or leave it.

That's a good idea, too.

I learned about casters from trial and error. I bought what "looked good" only to discover that the weight ratings were not what they stated. But I went back to HF and bought the steel wheel casters with rubber coating for the "tire" part of it. Worked well and no more problems. I agree, double up the weight ratings and stay with steel wheels, you'll find they work a lot better.

Also, I lucked up at an auction and bought 5 tobacco warehouse dollies for 5 bucks, 20 casters total, had 3" steel wheels on them. Had a buddy sell me some bigger casters for 1.00 each, 5" wheels all made of steel. Got casters stored away just in case I need them.
