I've used woven chain fencing, logs and railroad iron. All work to a limited degree. A LPGS is pretty expensive. I know, I have one. However - this "drag" costs very little and can be made just about any size needed. I tow mine behind my ATV. It's made of 4x4 material, a little plywood and some very large spikes. It has a rope yoke for towing. I can put weight on it if needed.

I am always amazed what beautiful work you can do with a drag if you just stay with it.

Looks like it should work fine. I would be afraid of the spikes in your design. It would be my luck one would break out and end up in a tire.

I built one out of some metal from some Kubota shipping frames. The key to using a drag is to loosen up the soil with a tiller or disc and repeatedly drag over until it's smooth to your liking. Smoothing land is a multi-step process.
