Unless it is a seldom used cabin, I'd do it right the first time.

Old drums are going to rust through (if metal) soon and you'll be reworking this homemade system in 5 yrs or so. By then, $600 for a tank you could have bought sounds cheap.

my 2 cents.

Terry look at the long term issues vs the short term savings. Even a 500 gallon tank made of concrete will be better than cob jobing it.
Codes or not do you want a working unit or not? If it's that seldom used dig an outhouse. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My brother-in-law did the drum thing with a mobile home. He had to put in a concrete tank 3 months later. He rode across his drums on a wet day on his 4-wheeler. Told me his whole day went to poo-poo after that. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I recall looking on the net for septic tanks. There are several sites you can visit by doing a search. Lots of tank options and instructions to do it properly.

This is something like a cabin and it will be used by one person or even two people at the most. The reason I'm doing this is I checked prices around town and the cheapest place wanted 250.00 just to come to the property with a back-hoe and 50.00 an hour afterward. Tank that is 1000 gallons is 500.00 which not bad but have it delivered 15 miles from town and they wanted 200.00 to deliver. The estimate from a local contractor was about 2000 to 2500 for a complete job.

Thanks, Terry
