If used on ice the one with the straight lugs could make for an interesting ride!:D

I seem to remember something similar here on the forum years ago. As I recall they were used because of locus thorns causing flats at an alarming rate. Any idea if that area has much locus?

In that case Id go for foam fill. Those metal treads would give less traction on anything but ice [r4 w chains would be better tho] and the metal would grind off faster than rubber in normal use.

Maybe I'm watching more because I'm from "away"? I saw them mostly between Geneva and Dundee. Seemed like every farmer had them. Looked to be very dense Mennonite population. There was actually road damage from horseshoes and the straight "white" lines on the fresh paving caused by steel wagon wheels. But then, I drive a big scary truck, and everyone knows we are the sole culprit to road damage.

There was also obvious damage where the occasional farmer had to cross the road, but not as severe as what carbide runners and pics have done to the road where an ITS sled trail crosses the road from my property.

I was impressed by the sign coming into one of the towns that said "These people fill your plate three times a day. Please slow down"

The only place around here that I see cleats like that is on the payloader at the landfill. That makes sense because the guy is driving all day over nails and garbage that would destroy even solid rubber tires.

If it's as common as the OP suggests, I bet there's some local problem that makes the investment worth it. Most of the farmers I know are not into throwing money after something just because it's a fad.

Looks similar to the Mennonite tractors around here. No inflatable tires. All sorts of variations of steel and rubber though. They really catch your eye on a brand new shiney monstor tractor working a field, with dually steel tires.

I just spent a bunch of time working in the Finger Lakes Region of NY. What is up with this? Other than no flats, that is!:D I saw them everywhere, with all brands of farmers using them. All sizes and shapes, even saw a set on a small yard tractor.

The owner of a hardware store in Himrod said it cost him 1900 to make a set for his Farmall H.

Himrod? I never thought I would hear that mentioned on here! That is only a few miles from our place on Seneca. The steel wheel/tire stems from part of a religious belief...
