homebuilt backhoe

Here is the chain swing mechanism on my backhoe. 2 chains pulled by SA cylinders. The ends of the chains are pinned and they ride on smooth "wheels" instead of sprockets. It should be possible to get at least 270 deg. from this type of mechanism.

Might need to do a side dumper to not interfere with the rear mounted hoe.

Okay WB - I'll stop hijacking now. ;)

That's a little different that I had in mind, but that's an interesting setup.

I was thinking of a single sprocket with a chain wrapped around it. Theoretically, with the single sprocket setup you could build a backhoe with a full 360 degree swing or even more.

I still dont see how your going to get any depth with it maybe I am just thick in the photo your boom cylinder apears to be at least two thirds extended the pin point seems a long way away from pivot. I am eager to hear you explain ......

here i will try to explain

first off the boom cylinder has 18'' of travel. so i sould get aboat 5 1/2-6" of digging depth.

but i will probaly move the cylinder so i get more depth. but i will try it as is first

I like what you've done with the bucket linkage. That curved shape looks good, but also looks like it will give you more functionality.

I commend you on your efforts, but.

I believe the geometry on the bucket is not correct. I also believe you will put cracks in that bucket at the edges of the 4 x 4 angle. There should be a 2 or 3 in bar under the top of the bucket from side to side, below that angle iron to support all the force you will place on the bucket. As you push up and down on the tip of the bucket, it will start to bend and eventually crack.

In the picture with the dipper stick vertical, and the bucket on the tip, is where I see potential for breaking. If you push on the cylinder , the angle of the bucket to the roll over tabs is wrong, in my opinion.

Yes i know the bucket shape is not correct. the sheet i was cutting the sides out on was not wide anof.

The bucket does have a chunk of angle iron under the ears.

Ya i know its not done yet. will be getting a shorter cylinder for it also.

Just wanted to say you have done a great job so far, keep the pictures coming. By the the way you need to take that bucket to the dentist and have a set of dentures made for it. Although with the smooth lip style bucket they make great grave holes. But having teeth I think you will enjoy a lot more. be good.

After you finish that, why dont you make a backhoe for my Yanmar.:D Could have some fun. Great job on your backhoe.:)
