so i've been messing around with trying to build my own subsoiler. i got one of our local steel shops to cut me some shank extensions out of 3/4" plate for my box scrape rippers. my first attempt at welding them didn't work out so well, so i broke out my angle grinder and beveled both sides of the extension as well as the top of the ripper shank. i laid in full penetration groove welds, and built the bevel back up to flush with the surface of the plate. i only had time to make a couple of passes last night, but it held together.

so here is my question...how fast should i be running when dragging my subsoiler? my little branson is geared pretty low (12 total forward gears), but i think it would work a little better if i had a little momentum, rather than trying to "creep" through the hard stuff. also, how far apart should my "rows" be?

thanks,

-matt

Do you have a shear bolt?
Subsoiler - shear protection = Wow x Velocity^2

What is your lowest gear? Use that... Depending on how you build things, either your hard work will fail trying to absorb the momentum of your fast moving tractor when you hit an immovable object, or you will be needing to replace 3PH hardware, or rear axle cast brackets. Ramming into things was never in the design of your 3PH, it was designed and built to withstand the max traction force that your tractors weight and tires can provide. That max traction/pull force is achieved in the lowest gear. If that is not enough to get r done, get a bigger machine. There are many many posts on this forum from people who have pretzeled 3PH impliments and damaged the tractor 3PH hardware by hitting immovable objects at speed.

Got pics of your subsoiler?
