Kick, Roger that! Cold fusion, over time, would nearly eliminate the use of petroleum for fuel. The US has enough oil to supply lubricants for a long long time.

I believe we would treat the Middle East just like we treat Africa if they didn't have what we crave.

Patrick, there will be jubilation on my part if we free ourselves from the need for foreign oil.

I think if we paid for the wars with a tax on oil, we would soon find a way to do without foreign oil. I heard an estimate many years ago (before the gulf wars) that we were paying about $25 per barrel in military cost to keep the peace. Add that or more to oil and a lot of energy sources in the US get very cost competitive.

Dang, Mike, give us at least a few hours to spin out of control!

If its about oil, ask why do terrorists attack the US? If we stopped buying oil would the problem still exist? How about US support of a particular country in the Middle East? If we stopped that support would we NOT be "dragged" into the conflicts? Should we stop the support?

Since to discuss the questions would be political I'll leave you to answer for yourself.

Back to H cars. There was an article in the WSJ today about a company/man that has been singing the song of the PV future. For decades. He has trouble keeping up with orders now. But he has sucked millions of dollars from investors over the years. They have not made money but he still is singing. His company would be making money except for his investments in H production. It sounds like he MIGHT have been able to get the cost of PV to go lower and lower but only time will tell. IF one could spend a small sum of money on PV to generate H at home then maybe H power cars would be interesting. But short of Nuke generation of H, H usage is just another snake oil sales job.

I found it informative for the "average joe" that is interested in energy savings and where technology could be going OR what technology might be way, way out there. Just a suggestion.

I used to work for a loonybin called the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and they have been researching hydrogen and all sorts of renewable/sustainable energy stuff for over 20-years.

Lots of good people out there, except for the ones in charge are fruitcakes. Anyway, I made my little editorial comment on my former employer, so now here is their web site for checking out the latest in what us NRELians called "hippie engineering."
