Don't wear red. Yellow jackets in particular are not color blind and when agitated will first go for anyone wearing red. I found out the hard way. Another guy stirred up a nest and the bees bypassed 3 other people and came after me. I was the only one wearing red. I have since noticed thish happening with others too.

Frank,
I think I saw this hornet trap idea on TBN.

Get a 1 gal. milk jug and cut a small hole in it. Probably about 3/8". You want the hornets to be able to get in, but not butterflies and hummingbirds.

Mix 1/2 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and 1 cup cider vinegar. The sugar may not all disolve, and you can use a little less.

Hang outdoors.

The hornets will go inside, drink and die.

Hope this helps. I haven't tiried it myself, but I keep it on file in case the hornets get bad.

I've also heard not to wear white, and not to wear pastels, and not to wear dark colors. What's left? I do know that the last couple of times I've been stung, it's been through one of my white socks. A couple of years ago, I was walking up some outside steps at my office and there just happened to be a nest of yellow wasps under a step. I was stung five times on the ankle, through my white sock.

I have found tan and light grey to be good colors for bee avoidance and pretty cool in the heat too.

You've just given me another reason to never use a shovel when I have a tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Up here in Wisconsin, folks are pinning Bounce dryer sheets on their shoulder for keeping gnats and skeeters off. Haven't tried it for myself yet but my dad and mom swear it works. Maybe this would keep the casual flying around wasps away.

I use those to keep lions away. I put one in my back pocket. So for they've worked perfectly. I haven't even seen one lion since I started using them..

Cliff,
I keep a bounce on my tractor as a meteor deflector, worked so far. I don't think they will work with stirred up bees though. Ticked off bees don't stop for much of anything....feet don't fail me now...close door...pick off attached bees...
