Some grain in a feed bucket will make the catching much easier. You might also try some small gravel or something in the can just to shake if you don't want to get some feed. Your friend might have feed and a coffee can. The humane society here takes large animals. You might also try looking in the yellow pages for barns that do riding lessons. They might be able to help you find the owners or be willing to take the horse.

I can relate how much of a pain the piles can be. One of the wife's horses like to take a dump right in front of the barn door where I keep the tractor.

I would build a pen to keep it OUT maybe. It's not really hurting anything, but it's crapping all over my yard and driveway and I don't want it to be my responsibility. I didn't realize the sheriff's department would do anything about it. I'm about to head to work now, if it's still there in the morning I'll call them.

At first I thought it belonged to someone, but since nobody around here knows anything about it, I think someone dumped it. It does look pretty mangy.

Little guy is in trouble, needs your help.

Sounds like a tough catch, they get very wary. Might try just sitting on the ground and letting him come up to you, he will, no fast moves. When he approaches you could offer a 1/4 apple, talk softly. No fast grabs. You get his halter and he will likely be in control. He see's a rope he likely will not come to you. Keep whatever you have for a rope out of sight of him till you have a hand on his halter.

Have several pony's and couple horse's and goats. Your right in not keeping it. Takes some desire to own and willingness to do what it needs to properly board and feed it.

Let the authorities take him, hopefully it will go to a rescue and find a good home.

One more thing, his greatest risk now, aside from getting hit by a car, is in getting too much food of the wrong kind, not in starving to death. If you feed him at all just hay, only use horse feed, oats ect. in the smallest of amounts to tempt him to you. Big shot of grain ect. could make him lame for life, screw up his hoofs forever.

ddb123,

Check to see if there is any kind of "Equine Rescue" in your area.

I volunteer at one (that is also where my horses are coming from).

She regularly goes and picks up abandoned or neglected horses and ponys.

But we are in VA (so no help to you).

David

I agree with this. There usually is some sort of horse/pony/donkey rescue that may be able to assist in capture and removal.

You are really right about him seeing the rope and getting scared.

He was gone for a day, then showed up hanging out in my yard again. Yesterday my co-worker and I tried to bait him and they did just what you said, sat on the ground with a half apple and just sat there for 30 minutes. I did the same but on a different edge of the yard in case the horse wandered the other direction. Eventually the horse went to him, but as soon as he moved, the horse leaped away. So, he sat back down with the other half of the apple and waited again. After what seemed like forever, the horse came again. One quick little move, and he had the halter. I thought it was time for an entertaining show of my co-worker getting dragged around the yard, but the horse just seemed to give up at that point. They got it loaded up and hauled away, yay!

People who try to control livestock with whips, shock sticks, loud yells, chasing, etc., are generally ignorant of livestock, regardless of how much "experience" they claim to have. We learned to read the animal, where to stand, how to move, etc. You get an animal all worked up and they can be impossible to control.

Are you familiar with Temple Grandin, pretty interesting person and approach to dealing with livestock.

I was raised to handle them the old way, but no longer deal with them at all.
