Horseflies & Other equine pests -What to DO!!!!

We used this method when I was younger and I still use it today, even though I have only three cattle now and no horses. But it worked on both cattle and horses on my Father's farm. We strung a rope between two trees and wrapped the rope with burlap sacks. We poured diesel fuel on the burlap sacks and we tied flyps down from the rope at intervals. We placed the mineral and salt blocks nearby. In this way the animals would pass under the rope. After awhile, they would go to this set up without even partaking of the mineral or salt blocks. They seemed to realize that this helped them with the fly problem afflicting them. There are chemical additives that you can purchase today along with a modern version of this method, but we used the rope, burlap, and diesel because they were readily available. Just a thought. Best wishes.

Would you believe I've NEVER seen my horses partake of the salt or the mineral block since the day they arrived...

I would think diesel is not good for their skin/hair/fur... Very interesting...

Thanks,
David

Perhaps a combination of wet early spring then prolonged dry spell around here, but I've never see the %!@$% flies as bad as they are this year.

you can makes rubs abd booms out of burlap or old tube socks stuffed with tshirts or floss.. then soak with oil emulsion permethrin for cows and horses to pass under or rub on.

kills the heck out of flies.

any one know if the pour on for cattle is ok for use with horses? My horses dont mind the spray but the steer jumped the water trough when I sprayed him. I made a rub for him last night but used water mix to spray on the cloth and it dried before he went through it.

Liked the idea of the spray mixed with diesel that might work and then I dont spend the 32 bucks for the pour on stuff

i use the same permethrin powder / dust ( can put the dust in those rubs as well ).. and the water emulsion mix for my dogs, chickens, swine cattle and equines.

I don't put it on my cats..

Whoa. You guys are really allowing your livestock to rub chemicals, and DIESEL FUEL??!? all over themselves to prevent insect bites?!?

Sorry, I am no livestock farmer, but this seems crazy. You are poisoning them (and yourselves). I guess when the animals are truly going insane because of the bugs, they need some relief, toxic as it may be.
