Whoa. You guys are really allowing your livestock to rub chemicals, and DIESEL FUEL??!? all over themselves to prevent insect bites?!?

Sorry, I am no livestock farmer, but this seems crazy. You are poisoning them (and yourselves). I guess when the animals are truly going insane because of the bugs, they need some relief, toxic as it may be.

you are correct... you are no livestock farmer.

it's quite common to have socks and booms covered in powder or a pesticide for parasite control...

i don't use diesel on mine. i use a pesticide usually.. but if I was growing beef to eat.. there are plenty of organic preps you can use.

mint oil and clove oil, eucalyptus, and menthol are all natural products you could put on the rubs and booms. all will repel pests.. most will kill them. clove oil among the best. clove oil is even safe for ears / ear mite treatments.

and yes.. I bet some people let them suffer.. or did things you aren't aware of.

turpentine and kerosene were multi purpose fluids back then!

many times animals were oiled too.. hog oilers were common.back inthe early 1900's they were invented. hogs rubbed onthem to oil their skin to prevent or relieve insect infestation. hog lice was common.

cholera could wipe out an entire herd.

before you condemn something.. try doing a lil research first huh?

There were several methods used years ago to control flies, lice; etc in cattle. These methods implemented the use of arsenic, toxaphene, and even DDT. There are countless old Dip Vats that are being discovered quite frequently and the area around them are still contaminated, even today, by arsenic that penetrated the surrounding soil. I saw these old vats while I lived and worked in Florida. BTW, are you positive that the beef you stated that you are eating is truly Organic? Dear Sir: Why are you so aggravated and angry? There was no indication at all of hostility or any signs of derogatory statements involved in my post. I simply asked a question in regards to a statement that you previously made. Or was it perhaps another member suggesting that you do a little research beforehand? This is a forum and we all can learn from each others' experiences.

I agree. We all can learn from each other. This is a forum, not a Boxing Match. There are no winners or losers. The majority of us are here to increase our knowledge regarding subjects or areas that we are unfamiliar with.

I don't think he was mad at you guys, he was mad at the information you presented. In the end, you burst his bubble on how his "grass fed, organic beef" is treated while it is still on the hoof. His idea of "organic" doesn't marry up with your methods of animal husbandry, that's all... Or as we used to say in the USAF, "You shat in his Wheaties"!

And I remember Grandaddy's hog oiler, them hams tasted awfully good after a couple of months in the smoke house! :thumbsup:

i agree.

I believe many people are mistaken about where their food comes from. a young nephew, when asked where his food comes from could only come up with 'walmart'

most people don't think past the grocery store shelf. and the few that do, perhaps grow an animal inthe back yard for consumption may not understand that what you do for 1 or a small herd of cows is not typically what is done on a heard of thousands of head on an industrial farm.

if you want that ground beef to be a couple bucks a pound on the shelf.. you can sure bet they are not hand deloused every day.. now led by a docotr to check health.

they are medicated and housed in a way to maximize size and potential. disease and insect predation reduce profit margin.. same reason green farmers spray crops... so bugs don't eat holes in their pockets.

i'm surprised he wasn't aware of the homeopathic / natural / organic insect conmtrol methods. those have been used for a loooong time.. for a small herd of organic dinner table goodies.. you can actually get away using mint / menthol / euc/clove type products. also natural plant insecticides like pyrethin which is what permethren was more or less synthesized to replace is.
