Oil & Fuel Hot or cold ?

My buddy with a Deere said he has to check transmission level cold, says so in the manual. I got curious and checked my book and all it said was "check it on a level surface with engine off".
No mention about hot or cold that I could find.
Whats your thoughts on this?

My manual also says cold. I think that is so all the fluid can settle down to give an accurate reading and avoid overfill.
