Hot!

   / Hot! #51
I just returned to NJ Saturday after spending 2.5 weeks in north/central Arkansas, so I've been dealing with this heat & humidity for the last couple weeks. I find that as I get older I tolerate the heat less & less...

30 years ago was my first visit to the desert. Spent the afternoon at White Sands National Monument in NM with the GF & her 2 kids, & her sister & her 2 kids. I was the only one who didn't get sick from the heat. 110ー & no humidity felt about the same as 90 does here in NJ with humidity. I just stayed in the shade as much as possible (picnic tables all had canopies) & drank 2 waters for every beer (both of them). Funny, we (GF, her sister & I) were just laughing about this last week.

35 years ago I was also a snipe working in the engineroom. At least the heat was consistent summer or winter, unlike the deckies... We did spend the month of June in Gitmo for refresher training & a shake-down cruise of the new ship. Now THAT was miserable! Tropical humidity, 95ー air temp, 95ー rain, 95ー water temp in the bay. There was no escape except on board in the A/C, which was kept around 70ー, making it even more miserable to go on deck!

Spent an hour & a half cutting the lawn Sunday, then another couple hours running the RM in the fields. You'd think sitting & driving around wouldn't cause me to sweat, but I was soaked by the time I quit. Finished up the fields Monday after another 2.5 hours of mowing, & again, soaked when finished. I'm sure I could deal with it better if the heat wasn't so sudden & intense.

At least it looks like we'll be getting a break tonite & getting back to more "normal" temps. Like some of you, I really don't mind the heat, but I hate being all sweaty & wet.

It's been hot and humid in Central PA for a week now, mid-90's and humid, not much for a breeze, either. The operating floor at work was 108 degrees the other day. I guess it beats last year, though. It was so dry, I saw a fire hydrant chasing a dog.

We've been getting rain almost nightly here in WNY. So while it's been hot for about a week, it's been wet also. We need the rain.

I went to a web site in Montana today. Big Sky ski resort. No joke, the 12th of June and they got a foot of SNOW!!!.

Holy ****. It's the middle of summer and they got a foot of SNOW.

Does Montana get a summer?

I got home from work yesterday about 5:30. I did a few things in the house and then went outside and changed out a headlamp on the car. After that, I gathered up some tools and installed the brackets for my tractor canopy. By the time I was finished, I was dripping wet with sweat. The darn humidity wore me out.
Welcome to the south. Summer is already here.

Our heat went away but the winds shifted and brought heavy smoke from a fire down on the coast. We had a Code Red air quality alert yesterday. I don't ever remember on of those before. At 8:00pm last night I went outside and the smoke made my eyes water.

Twas going to take a half day off today but the smoke is going to keep me inside away from chores. Its clearing but I'll save the half day of vacation and let the smoke clear out some more.

Tried to open the windows this morning to enjoy the cooler temps but too much smoke.

Later,
Dan

It was lower 90s today. Hurray, it felt like a cold spell after the really hot temperatures we have had the past couple of weeks. Even got a little rain in the past few days, too. However...I was digging with the loader today and the soil has moisture only in the top 5 inches or so. Below that it is bone dry. We have been in a drought for more than the past 6 years and the soil moisture deeper in the ground just isn't there, anymore. There are things going on we don't see. All the rain has fallen in the midwest causing floods. We need some of that rain.

I grew up there. Has snowed in the mountains in July before. Going to the Sun Road in Glacier Park is only open about 4 months of the year.

We got 3-4" snow here in the mountains outside of Boise on like the 9th, and those mountains aren't very high (7600 feet at the peak).

75-80 and sunny here all week - I'm guessing no one wants to hear it! Did get up to 82 in the house last weekend, which was crazy.

Course, I'm getting ready to plant tomatoes, and from the sounds of it y'all are eating tomatoes you planted months ago.
