Howdy folks,

I picked up a 1910 a couple weeks ago, hour meter does not appear to be working. Is there anyone who repairs these or would the cost be unreasonably high? I just would like to keep track of hours for maintenance purposes. Using it mainly for snow removal and moving heavy stuff, although I'd like to get a finish mower for it some day.

I think the general answer is "no", at least if it is digital.

If you bought it used, it's even possible that you already have a replacement meter in it.

I had to replace an unreadable (original) hour meter on my Ferris zero turn a few years back. I knew approximately what the hours on the old meter were, so wrote it on the underside of the new meter and in my records.

like you, I use it mainly for tracking maintenance intervals.

the new meter was not expensive; under $30 I think. Probably about the same for most.

No this tractor has an old analog meter like the odometer in cars. I would buy one of those digital ones but they're significantly more expensive for a diesel. The gas ones I have seen use an inductive spark pickup but that won't work on a diesel.

I suppose I could use one that just ticks when it's powered instead of getting signal from the engine.

This is what mine looks like

Maybe pull it out and see if there are any broken/corroded connections, and spray some penetrating spray on any little moving parts and let it soak over night in case the little gears are corroded.

Have nothing to lose I guess.....

amazon has wireless hour meters. stick on or screw on. meter starts when the engine does and stops when the engine stops.
have some on my generators and sawmill. you could put it under the hood somewhere. under 20.00

Do a search for tachometer repair, several places repair them

Is it an hour meter within the tachometer? If so, on that tractor it’s probably cable driven. Check the cable, should run from the cluster down to the engine.

My thought was since the tachometer works the cable must be ok?

Analog hour meter on a Cub Cadet I bought didn't work. Taking it apart then using Blow Off spray and Kroil got it working.
I just had to be very careful, it's like a clock.
Then used machine oil in a syringe (tip ground off) on moving parts.

I had considered that but I expected to find stripped gears. I'll definitely give it a try, thanks!

I had the same problem with my 1715 and after my research it was cheaper to just replace with new. The plastic gears that drive the hour meter wear out and most shops won't replace them or parts were not available. I checked my old receipt and I replaced mine 13 years ago and the cost was $130 from the dealer.

I think that OEM mechanical hr meter is calibrated to register 1 hr @ rated 450 PTO rpm. I hardly ever run my rig at 450 pto rpm or 2400 engine rpm unless I need it, so it will take me more seat time than one hr for the hr meter to reflect 1 hr. While in college I had an issue with my speedometer so I bought a cheap tach, calibrated speed based on RPM and used it for many years. Of course , I had an ignition system with gasser to get a signal for the Tach. We all know that diesel does not have electrical ignition.
