How Do I test to see if my meter is working correctly?
I bought my New TC 34DA back in April/May of 2006
I have 364hrs --does this seem high

Johnny, first you need to know which of two types of "hour meter" or "proof meter" you have. One type is nothing more than an electric clock that runs any time the key is turned on. So you could check that one against your watch to see if it's running right; i.e., registering one hour in one hour. Now of course if you should shut down the engine but leave the key turned on, it's going to register hours while it's just sitting there. The other type is tied to engine rpm; runs off a cable. That type usually registers one hour in one hour only if the engine is running at PTO speed. For example, if PTO speed is 2600 rpm and you're running at 1300 rpm, it'll take 2 hours for it to register one hour.

And I don't know which type your tractor has, but I'll bet some of our other members do.

I'll be it is like my TC24D. It is based upon engine RPM. Around 1840 RPM counts as an hour. Anything above that registers higher anything lower and it registers slower. Seems like it works pretty well. I think it is more accurate than just time based. It lets me know how the engine really was working.

I don't think that is particulary high. Most tractors in agricultural work clock up 1000+ hours a year.

Obviously no way to know if hours are high no matter how they are measured unless you kep track of how many actual hours you have used tractor for. Do they seem high, yes for some, no for others :D

For me 36 hours can be 2 day's worth of work when harvest season hit's. For others it could take over a year to rack up that amount. As others have stated there are two types of hour meter, a true time piece that measures time anytime the key is on and the other that is a little more realistic that averages your time to engine RPM's.

You were just told how to.

Test it.

Set your rpms at ihi-dle and keep in that range for an hours worth of light work.. or joy riding.

Check your watch. After 1 houtr registers on your watch.. see what registers on your tractor. If 1 hr registers onthe tractor.. you have an electric hour meter. if significantly less registers.. you most likely have a proof meter.

Now.. do some pto speed related work.. IE.. mowing.. set pto rpm and mow for an hour.. reference your watch. Does about 1 hr roll up on the proofmeter after an ahour of mowing at pto rpm???
